Wisconsin Dells Economy

Wisconsin Dells Economy
Allie Guizzetti

When you think of Wisconsin Dells you might think of waterparks and roller coasters but these aren’t the main things that are bringing in money to the city. With the Wisconsin Dells being the “Waterpark Capital of the World”, a lot of money is brought into this town-- especially during the summer. As of 2017, the total amount of money spent by visitors in the summer in The Dells was $504,154,807 (wisdells.com). More money is made in the summer as people are more likely to be outside and enjoy the warm weather, but how is Wisconsin Dells able to remain a stable economy through the fall and winter months?
Most of the revenue comes from lodging, food and sales; three things that can be done not only in the summer, but in the remaining seasons as well. To be exact, food and serving holds 18.3% of revenue and sales holds 12.6% of revenue (datausa.io). Also, the total amount of expenditures for lodging was $414,988,037 in 2017 (wisdells.com). Wisconsin Dells is a vacation stop for many people which makes sense why there are so many hotels and that lodging is what makes in the most money. It is a necessity that the people demand to have when they are on vacation. Also, food is a necessity for visitors. For example, if you are at the water park Mt. Olympus, you’re only able to eat the food they have supplied at the park so the company raises its prices because they know that is the only choice for the consumers. Overall the total visitor spending was over $1.58 billion, a jump of just over 3.5% from last year (wisdells.com)

As well as income, employment plays a large role in Wisconsin Dells economy. From 2015 to 2016, employment in Wisconsin Dells, WI grew at a rate of 20.8%, from 1,152 employees to 1,392 employees (datausa.io). Employment has continued increasing since then as there are always more attractions being built and overall the expansion of the Dells. Out of all jobs, most people work with preparing and selling food (towncharts.com). These jobs are very useful year round which makes the economy stable not only in summer but the other seasons too. Also, unemployment rates in Wisconsin Dells are steadily going down which shows for a good working economy as a whole.
Overall, Wisconsin Dells is bringing in a lot of money is multiple ways which keeps their economy running smoothly. Even in Fall, Winter and Spring, the amount of money that is being brought in is steady each year. Summer brings in most of the profit but the $1.5 billion definitely assists the economy overall.

  1. I find it interesting that the Dells makes more money during the summer when so many of its parks are indoors and could just as easily be used during the winter months. I think it’s very smart on Mt. Olympus’s end to raise prices of the foods at the park because it is the consumer’s only option, therefore they are willing to spend more money on food. I wonder how much extra money the Dells brings in from hosting tournaments there? It is likely that teams get a discounted rate to stay in the Dells, but does that help or hurt the amount of money coming into the Dells corporation?

  2. The Dells definitely is a huge money maker for WI in the summer time because of the attractions of outdoor water parks. No other places around really have that so people come from very far and spend time and money in the Dells. While I can see how food and lodging are their main sources of revenue, I also would think that other things like the tourist attractions are a major source. For example, the duck boat tours that go in the river and on land are something that is not found many places besides the Dells, so the demand for people who want to do that goes way up allowing them to drive the prices up as well. Also, well the Dells is a primary summer attraction, I can see how they still make a lot during the off season because of sports tournaments held there and skiing in the winter months. This is interesting because of how it impacts the WI economy as a whole.

  3. Having a seasonal business is definitely a challenge. The Dells especially because a main source of the income is from waterparks and other attractions that many people only really access during the summer. It is interesting that most of the income is from food sources because there is so much to do but because it is a vacation spot, many people don’t have access to food so they go out to eat. The Dells is definitely a huge income source for the state as a whole because there isn’t much attraction in Wisconsin besides the Dells and Milwaukee that require people to spend money. The downfall with the Dells is that it is a waterpark and most of the time people are thinking about Florida or Arizona or some other warm place this time of year, and not thinking about a trip to the waterpark. This therefore decreases their income but because of the surplus in the summer, there is money that they still have access to when they aren’t getting as much income.

  4. Wisconsin dells brings in a ton of revenue, afterall it is a huge money-maker in the state as a whole. So after knowing this, how would the state be affected if the Wisconsin Dells did not exist? There wouldn’t be nearly as many job opportunities, all of the 507 million dollars would not be gained, and families would have to go somewhere else in the summer to spend their time and have some fun. Personally, I love the Wisconsin Dells and think it is a ton of fun, so even if prices are high and such, it is still a great time for a few days during the year.

  5. Man I love the Wisconsin Dells all the lodges there are so nice and there is so many fun stuff to do there. The whole reason why the Wisconsin Dells is making so much money is because they invest a lot into what they are building and producing. Since people have a high amount of respect for this company they can charge more money for what they offer because then they know that people will pay for a amazing experience even though it may cost more. I personally wouldn’t mind paying a good amount of money to have a amazing week to hang out with friends and family and I got to say the lodges there are pretty nice.

  6. The thing that I’m surprised about is how the Dells does better in the winter than in the fall. The only valid explanation for this that I have is that school starts up in the fall which would impact parent’s decisions when it comes to taking a vacation. Winter also contains the holiday season, which may increase overall revenue if families need a getaway.

  7. It’s not very surprising that Wisconsin Dells has a huge profit during the summer, considering the very expensive prices they have and the amount of people that visit. It’s smart that the parks increase their prices, because they know that people will still pay to go there. However, I did find it surprising that they still had a pretty large profit during the other seasons as well, especially during winter. This could be because the restaurants and lodging will have more customers because the water parks are down. Overall, Wisconsin Dells is a very big attraction, and they have smart economic skills by raising their prices just enough so that they’ll make a big profit, but not too much to turn away customers.

  8. The fact that a waterpark industry such as the Wisconsin Dells is still able to bring in millions of dollars worth of revenue during seasons where going to a waterpark isn’t in very high demand, is astonishing because many of those who love to go to waterparks are kids. Which would seem like that would make it difficult to make a lot of money during the three seasons outside of summer because of school. This shows what a great job the Wisconsin Dells has done with advertising, even during the colder months, to get families to come to the Dells and use their water parks, just on the weekends or even over the holiday breaks.

  9. Wisconsin Dells is able to avoid is able to avoid seasonal unemployment and maintain a steady economy in the colder months by supplying goods and services that can still be utilized as the temperatures drop. Many of the waterparks in the area have a large indoor section in addition to the outdoor sections, so people can still swim and enjoy the waterslides in the middle of January. The Dells also offers a lot of restaurants, shopping malls, and shows that attract tourists during the fall and winter. Because of these different features, there is still demand from consumers during all seasons which allows the Dells as a whole to keep workers and maintain a steady economy.

  10. It makes sense that the Wisconsin Dells are busiest during the summer months when the weather is good. Due to the significant change in weather here in Wisonsin, people are more likely to travel up north when it is warmer especially when you add waterparks into the equation. The lodging and food prices go up becuase the demand is higher in these more touristy areas. Another place you see this is in airports. In airports the restraunts are able to hike their prices up because people cannot go outside of the airport to get food. This is smart for businesses becuase they are taking advantage of people's willingness to pay.

  11. Wisconsin dells does bring in a lot of money but if they didn't they would not be able to support the water parks and they would have to close down. This effects the economy by having a place for people to go when they need a break from everything. If they didn't have these water parks Wisconsin dells would not be really supporting its self so these water parks play a big role.

  12. Another way that they continue to bring in money during the fall and winter months is there indoor attractions in some of the more famous hotels such as the Kalahari and the Wilderness. Both of those places are still highly populated during the fall and winter months because of there indoor attractions. I go to the Kalahari every year and I have seen something new get add to the indoor amusement park and the indoor water park and that is causing people like me to want to come back every year and checkout what’s new.

  13. I think that it’s crazy to notice that the dells is still popular even when there is snow on the ground and it’s below freezing outside. But it’s very surprising that so many people will go up to the Wisconsin Dells over the summer and the amount of money that is put in, is almost as shocking as seeing a ridiculous price! Last year on the winter, my family and I actually went to the dells for a few days (Wilderness Resort) and when we went to the indoor water parks, there was so many people, it was like going to Summerfest! Almost every water slide that we wanted to go on was extremely long and we had to wait for a really long time. It’s crazy to see the amount of people at a water park in freezing weather and thinking half of the people that were there would be at school or at work. It’s shocking to see such an amazing water park still very popular all year round and still have thousands of people still having the greatest time of their lives!

  14. I also think. contributing factor in the success of the Wisconsin Dells is its location. It is located in an area with out many near attractions and not much else to do. Because there is not many attractions throughout the Wisconsin area, this town is very popular by default. There's not many places to take your kids for a quick trip in the summer except the Wisconsin Dells. Also, they find success because they have no competitors in the area. There are no nearby vacation towns that compete with the Dells. Therefore, as mentioned before, they get all the revenue of vacationers looking for this kind of attraction.

  15. Living so close to the Wisconsin Dells, I never thought twice about how much of a major attraction it really is. Especially for people in-state, the Dells is quite a popular destination for those often looking to get away for just a few days -- maybe even less. I believe this is due to Wisconsin not having much of anything like it, giving people (families, in particular) from all across the state even more reason to spend their money enjoying all that the Dells has to offer.

  16. The booming water park capital of the world has both positive and negative externalities. Other businesses in the area are positively affected by the tourists and vacationing families that are staying in the Dells. However, these companies must find other ways to bring in business during the winter and fall seasons as these months are slower in the Wisconsin Dells. A negative externality that results from the massive tourism drawn in during the summer is that traffic in the area is backed up for miles. Overall, the water parks don’t often account for the externalities but rather focus on their own economic gain and profit.

  17. Hey everyone!
I'm so excited. My ex-boyfriend is back after few months of breakup, I’m extremely happy that will are living together again. My boyfriend of 4yr just broke up with me and am 30 weeks pregnant. I have cried myself to sleep most of the nights and don’t seem to concentrate during lectures sometimes I stay awake almost all night thinking about him and start to cry all over again. Because of this I end up not having energy for my next day’s classes, my attendance has dropped and am always in uni and on time. Generally he is a very nice guy, he ended it because he said we were arguing a lot and not getting along. He is right we’ve been arguing during the pregnancy a lot .After the break up I kept ringing him and telling him I will change. I am in love with this guy and he is the best guy I have ever been with. I’m still hurt and in disbelief when he said he didn’t have any romantic feelings towards me anymore that hurt me faster than a lethal syringe. He texts me now and then mainly to check up on how am doing with the pregnancy, he is supportive with it but it’s not fair on me, him texting me as I just want to grieve the pain and not have any stress due to the pregnancy.
I was really upset and I needed help, so I searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Ahmed can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and I did it then he did a spell for me. 17 hours later, my bf came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I and my bf are living together happily again...

  18. I agree with the comments above that it is interesting that the Dells takes in so much of their revenue in the summer months. The Dells has made a name for itself over the past 20 years and is a tourist destination for people not from Wisconsin as well. This namesake helps create those large crowds in the summer, and keeps people coming back year after year. There are also not many other cities across the country which have numerous large water-parks within miles of each other, this once again makes the Dells very desirable for families looking to vacation on a budget, but also have many options.

  19. As expected the Dells are going to make a ton of revenue throughout the summer months. The warm weather helps with bringing in families from all over, but you cannot just write off the winter months so easy. You can look at this from a whole new perspective. Families may look at going to go to the water park capital of the world during the winter months as well. The Dells have great indoor water parks, that are going to attract families that want to get out of the cold winter. I assume that most of the revenue that is brought in during the winter months are from people that are in Wisconsin, or in the Midwest that are looking to get out of the cold and take a little vacation. Compared to the summer months, I would assume this is where people travel a little more from farther locations to experience the water parks and rides. It is really interesting to see how much money a city in Wisconsin can make. I really like the article, and really opened my eyes to see what is going on in Wisconsin.
