Gucci: Is it Overpriced?

Gucci - Are Their Products Overpriced?
Kylie Seeberger

Have you ever had a shirt that had a seam come out? That’s because of the poor quality. The production of regular everyday clothing is not the best quality. Gucci products are made in Europe, and the workers are paid much more than the workers in China, Bangladesh, etc. These products are made to be the highest quality possible. They have better materials (such as pima cotton), better workmanship, as well as better work conditions. Buying Gucci products isn’t just a purchase, it’s an investment. If you buy a button-up shirt from Walmart, it probably isn’t going to last you a year without having any rips or tears in it, causing you to either look unprofessional, or having you buy a new one. Because of the high quality of Gucci products, as long as you take care if them, they’ll stay in good condition for quite a long time.

All expensive companies are known because of their ads being everywhere. And of course that costs money. That’s where most buyers’ money goes. By buying from Gucci, you are helping the company expand.

The less of something there is, the more valuable it becomes. Back in 2008, it was a big deal to have an iPhone. Now, if you see someone with an iPhone, you don’t think twice about it. That’s because in April of 2018, 82% of teenagers had iPhones (Teens Use an IPhone - And It’s Growing). If everyone was wearing products from Gucci, it wouldn’t be a big deal. To prevent that from happening, Gucci made their products much more expensive. Of course you’re paying for a single thing for more than it’s worth, but you won’t see anyone else with that same exact shirt around here.

At a net worth of $50 million, Jeffree Star is one of Gucci’s most frequent buyers. Jeffree had stated that he has a ‘closet where Gucci goes to die’. “It has a lot of Gucci that came out last year. I usually wear it once for a tutorial, then put it in here” (27 Of the Most Shocking Things We Learnt about Jeffree Star). Jeffree has spent about $2 million on products from Gucci. Due to the fact that Gucci is so expensive, rich people tend to buy from it. It is also very rare to see Gucci products on people who aren’t celebrities. Since celebrities do show off their Gucci clothes, it gets more people to buy them, earning them more money.

  1. Gucci, due to having higher quality products, need prices to match that. If it didn't match, they would not be making a profit. Not only that, but high prices also help to protect the Gucci name. If Gucci was cheap, we would all wear it, rendering it no longer "special", but due to the high prices, it is unattainable for many, unless they have a high disposable income in which they have money to spend on high quality clothes. With high prices, Gucci both makes a profit, as well as protects its novelty.

  2. Is Gucci overpriced yes, to me. I think when people are trying to decide if a product is overpriced or not it depends on the viewpoint of the individual consumer and whether or not they buy it or not. If a person wants to buy a tv and they look at the price and decide that they don’t want it anymore that means that the price is too much that they are willing to pay for and would rather buy cheaper goods that even though aren’t made as well you can take good care of it and it will last you a decent amount of time. But when you look at all these really rich people with millions of dollars in their pockets Gucci is like our Kohl’s and they can easily afford this product and they don’t think it is overpriced because they are willing to pay for it. When a good is overpriced is when consumers are not willing to spend their own money to pay for it but it varies from individual to individual.

  3. Being someone who is not filthy rich like Jeffree, i would like to have like a shirt or something from Gucci just because that would be cool, it’s kind of a status good. But how does this really affect the economy? I mean, if there is a shirt from walmart that is really cheap, but there are a lot of people buying those shirts, wouldn’t that eventually be equal to the minimal amount of people in the world buying Gucci because of their such high prices?

  4. Here’s a joke for you;
What’s the difference between a plain white tee and a Supreme shirt?
    $105.
When you buy overpriced goods, such as a special kind of food, or in this case, a somewhat well woven shirt, you’re not buying the good. You’re buying representation of the brand. Manufacturers such as Gucci and Supreme have become less of cloth lines and more like a status symbol company. Wearing their products can tell other people more about you in a glace than you could over 30 minutes of talking. The large, expensive icon on the back of the tag (or at the front of the shirt) shows everyone you walk buy just how ritzy you are.

  5. This a reason Gucci is so famous because looking at things on a economic level you wouldn't say it is brought in bigger masses but that it is bought more often people buy it in small amounts but everything is expensive so the bills are normally 1,000 dollars plus so you tell me every time someone walks into your store would you want to have it set up like Gucci?

  6. Gucci is an interesting brand because they sell basic things you could buy at most other stores, but they carry so much more value due to their high quality and logo. The brand has become very successful because of the quality of their goods and because of the reputation they have, which allows them to charge a high price for their goods. They probably have a very big profit from the production of their goods compared to the price they are selling them at, which is a good business strategy.

  7. Just because something is made in a different country, doesn’t mean it’s better quality. There is definitely products that come from China that are very well produced. iPhones are just one of those products that come from China and they are very well produced to be exactly what the people at Apple who designed them, want them to be. There is also an argument that if you spend $400 on a shirt for the shirt to last 4 or 5 years, or spending $20 every year for 4 or 5 years ($100) there is definitely a cost difference. Styles also change, and just because a person buys something expensive, does not mean they are going to wear it for 4 or 5 years because the style might change or they might not like it anymore. The cost of Gucci definitely outweighs the benefits of it.

  8. To many people Gucci is just another hit trend of the year which even though millions cannot simply afford it still makes it that much more interesting to buy leading to the hundreds of visitors they most likely receive each day. Though, there may be lots of visitors pouring into these stores it doesn’t mean any of them are still able to afford these items besides someone who has a lot of money in their pockets. If there wasn’t famous people who advertise their clothing would they still earn the recognition and money as much as they used too?

  9. I don't think Gucci products are overpriced. Gucci makes higher quality products so they need to sell at more expensive prices to make a profit. I also think that there is a certain market that they are trying to sell to. They are trying to make their items more valuable by trying to sell their items to higher class people. By focusing on people like celebrities they can still make a profit because they are willing to spend more on Gucci products, and Gucci can use that as a sort of advertising technique. I think when someone says it is overpriced, they mean that they, and other people like them, aren't willing to spend the money to buy it, but in this case we aren't the focused consumers.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Gucci does have a few things overpriced but if they didn't have it that way, then everyone would buy it. Then if everyone started buying it, it wouldn't be so cool. Also, I shop at Walmart often and like I'm always needing different sized clothes and different button ups, because my body is all over the place and I like to wear different clothes. There is different levels of clothing you can buy too, like Walmart then American Eagle, and then if you have a lot of money it's Gucci. So to answer the question is Gucci overpriced; they are because they need to be.

  11. While Gucci may have a higher quality product, this does not match the price of their products. The reason that Gucci is not out of business, despite its exorbitant prices, is because there is a huge demand market for luxury clothing among the top 2% of the population. Whether or not Gucci is "worth" the price depends on how you perceive its worth. Gucci is completely dependent on perceived worth, as are most businesses. If polyester suddenly becomes more desirable than Italian leather, the demand for "Walmart button-up shirts" will skyrocket, along with the prices, while the demand for Gucci belts will plummet.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Since Gucci has such high prices it can ensure that it is seen as a superior good compared to those available in every store. Gucci uses the income they get from pricing their clothes so high to invest in better quality products than their competitors. Their high costs offset their average price to higher better designers and using better materials. This way Gucci can create a brand that has a wealthy image and Gucci knows that by creating an image like this their main market (wealthy people) will be willing to spend the extra money for better products.

  13. Personally, I have been to a Gucci store just to browse with no intention to by anything whatsoever! However, I felt their tee-shirts and it felt like any old tee-shirt to me. Didn't seem to have a noticeably higher quality. I feel like if you're paying that much money you should for sure notice a difference. To me I think it's just more about the brand name and that's why it's so much money! It is interesting that they choose to not use a foreign company like China, but one that has higher standards. However, if they are charging that much they should be made in America.

  14. To the average person, Gucci is definitely overpriced. But to celebrities and those who are able to afford it, it isn’t. The reason Gucci needs to be so expensive is to establish themselves as a top luxury brand. If their prices were lower, everyone would buy it, and Gucci wouldn’t be a defining clothing brand. I think their prices are sort of crazy, but the logic behind the reasoning makes perfect sense. They’re preserving their title as a top name brand. The demand for higher priced clothes is very prevalent, as most of our society labels each other based on the clothes they wear, the stuff they own, and don’t pay attention to much else. Gucci is overpriced to the average American, but to the minor percentage of those who can purchase it, Gucci is nothing more than a regular purchase.

  15. In the wise words of Adam Sandler, the price is wrong. You can argue all you want about the production quality of Gucci (and Supreme, since it shares the same principles in this scenario), but in the end, it boils down to the fact that the prices for Gucci clothes are so high because it's a status symbol. There's no way that some arguably better production quality can jack up the price of one line of clothing. But slap on that sweet Gucci logo, and all of a sudden, it's upwards of $100. The only reason to buy one is to say "Hey look at what I can afford and you can't". It's a status symbol, and nothing more. Gucci's prices are, in this case, not gucci.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I also think that people buy this expensive of clothing to show off or to impress others because of the price and wealthy "status" it comes with. Also gucci is more popular then ever because a lot more artist and celebs are wearing it and even making songs about it.

  17. Even though Gucci have high prices we can see that the employees have good working conditions, and higher pay as you mentioned, however paying $900 for a T-shirt is out of hand. Gucci knows right now that they are a big company, they can increase supply, which will decrease demand, however since they are a big name compnay they can get away with selling their products for a lower price and it will bring in a lot more people as more people can afford it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Whenever there is a name brand like Gucci, of course the price is going to be ridiculously high. It's a designer brand. They aren't going to make their clothes just for everyone to buy it, you need to be able to have lots of income and mostly, have money to blow. Most people who shop at gucci are frequent buyers because of the extremely high prices. Most kids in high school won't even buy gucci, half of the prices are over 500 dollars at minimum. They might have a pretty good reputation for expensive clothes, but i can disagree with the fact that these clothes "last forever". Most designer clothes can easily have flaws as they aren't forever lasting and very durable. It's mostly for the culture.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The reason why so many people purchase Gucci is because of their demand for the brand. They could be just fine with their typical clothes but they’d rather show off their Gucci belts, and the company knows that. The popularity of the company keeps the business running as more and more famous people are wearing the brand which inspires lots of other people to buy the brand as well. If more and more people keep demanding the expensive product they will stay in business but if another company comes a long and more famous people start buying that product, Gucci brand sales might go down-- it all depends on the demand for the product.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree that Gucci may have higher quality products. That being said, I am not going to pay over one thousand dollars for a sweatshirt that will "last forever." Gucci's products have a GIANT profit margin for every piece sold by the company. The only reason it holds it's value is because it is so expensive and some of the stuff they release is so limited. Gucci's brand is revolved around higher quality products, which is true, but the quality of their sweatshirts doesn't suffice for a thousand dollar price tag. Not to mention four hundred and eight dollars for a "premium quality" plain tee shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that only rich and wealthy people buy Gucci. Or there are people that are dumb and want to be trendy by spending $200 on a t-shirt when they can't even afford it. I also do not think that just because a product is made from a certain country, its quality is better. There are many products that have great quality and are made from China etc. The brand Gucci just has that amazing reputation of super cool products. I think they are overrated and only the wealthy and followers demand for the product.

    ReplyDelete
  22. For prices, it comes down to who is willing to pay. Celebrities who are caught up in what to wear buy those brands, but also, the brands sometimes give them clothes to promote their brand. A lot of celebrities like the Kardashians receive their promoting products for free. Is that fair that the people who can clearly afford the brand get it for free while people who have to invest in it have to pay the full, and expensive amount? Doesn't this just demonstrate the ever-growing gap between the rich and the poor? Walmart clothes are not at poor-quality as people think. It has a view around it that it is a minimal product for only people who can't afford more. How is Gucci different besides the price?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would have to disagree with you that only celebrities wear Gucci, celebrities definitely started the trend to wear Gucci, but due to the brand’s high popularity, there are many people who wear it that aren’t celebrities. While the price point is high, like you said the quality is high end and the workers who make Gucci products are paid much more money and treated better than the workers who make the clothes at say Walmart, hence the high price.

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is a great example of supply and demand, even though the top few percent of the population can actually afford luxury clothing, there is still a huge market for it today. In fact Gucci isn't new to this market. Other expensive retail companies like Supreme, Hermes, etc. sell quality fashion pieces for way more than they might be worth. I agree that Gucci is overpriced though, only because of the brand itself. Companies like Gucci sell new designs every few months, but limit the supply available to the public. This strategy of creating a high demand and limited supply is what makes Gucci successful in the economy- it keeps consumers anxious for new releases. This is also what allows Gucci to overprice their products, since they know there is a high demand, Gucci can charge more because people will buy their clothing no matter what. In fact, the more expensive the product, the more people will want it so that they can show it off to their fans. It brings up an interesting question of what actually makes Gucci expensive? Is it their marketing technique, or supply of products? The quality of their products is not a factor in pricing- you could buy a high quality handwoven dress or shirt from any other market in the world and it would probably cost less, but since Gucci is a highly acclaimed brand, consumers will pay more.

  25. Although Gucci most likely could sell more product by lowering prices and moving their plants overseas, I believe that they have a reputation and tradition that makes them unique. Although the high prices are higher than most other clothes, that is part of the brand, it shows a sort of class. Unlike Chinese made goods, you pay more for the workers to have good conditions as well as the more expensive material used.

    ReplyDelete
  26. People buy supreme for the hype, exclusiveness, and name. I don't it can fully be said that people buy it for the extreme quality of the shirt. While their products are a lot more top tier than Walmart's items, there are many companies now a days trying to make the best possible product they can for the cheapest. So all that can be said is that owners of Gucci are buying it as a social status, and to show that they are in possession of more money than other consumers in the economy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree that Gucci may have higher quality products. That being said, I am not going to pay over one thousand dollars for a sweatshirt that will "last forever." 28. The fact that Gucci and other brands are considered premium is purely due to their image being built overtime as a brand that is worn by wealthy people such as actors and athletes. People are willing to pay higher prices to have an image as they wish, and in this case it is the image that they are wealthy and a member of high society.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that it is extremely beneficial for both makers and buyers of Gucci products to have the prices remain so high. This causes a niche market of buyers to be able to afford the products and also ensures that the employees making the products will get paid a sufficient amount. Also, if the prices became cheaper, more people would start buying Gucci and it would no longer be known as a luxury brand since everyone could now afford it; people wouldn't feel special making a purchase from Gucci as everyone and their neighbor would have the same exact products. Therefore, Gucci should stick to its' high priced, unique items that mostly allow celebrities to make statements from the rest of the general population.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I feel like Gucci is one of those brands that you don't necessarily buy for the quality, but more so to flex on people and show people your financial status. I agree that in some cases people buy Gucci for the quality and the design, but buying these luxury brands have become a big trend in modern society. Similar brands like Supreme and Louis Vuitton have been increasing in popularity just because they are expensive and very limited. In the future, I can see these brands to continue gaining popularity by not only being purchased by celebrities or people with a large amount of wealth, but by people in the middle class, attempting to showcase their status to peers.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Gucci is not the most affordable of brand, but their image causes a great amount of people to buy the product just because of the brand name. Additionally, even though you said that they make their products out of the most premium products and labor, I still don't believe that someone would buy the product just because of the every so slight increase to the quality of the product. Sure they might use grade a cotton, but what's the difference from regular products and why do they need to charge so much money for it?

    ReplyDelete
  32. While I agree that Gucci may have overpriced items, if consumers are still purchasing these goods then there is not a defined problem. Due to the fact that Gucci has a well known brand name, this allows them to have brand status advantage over others; customers who want to make a statement by wearing Gucci products will do so at these higher prices, because in their eyes the benefits outweigh the cost. You also raise an interesting point in saying how the more common the goods are, the less value they hold, which is another reason Gucci's supposed 'overpriced' goods are worth the large payment. Since there are less people consuming Gucci products, the value of both the price, quality, and 'pride' of wearing Gucci becomes higher. Therefore, while many people may view Gucci's products as overpriced, there is a large enough customer base built up from the brand status to maintain a successful company, which increases the desire to wear a high end brand of clothes/accessories such as Gucci.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree that brands like Gucci are overpriced, I believe there needs to be brands like this in order for economy to continue running the way it is. If people don't have the option to purchase overpriced goods people may feel restricted by the government. Additionally, you mentioned that by buying from Gucci you are enabling their brand expansion; however, this is true for any brand as by buying products will allow companies to continue growing and allows them to stay in business. For the people purchasing the product the brand status and design is worth the high price tag and there are people in the higher class other than celebrities who choose to purchase from luxury brands. People also may justify the high prices as sensible due to the fact they labor used to create the items is done so that does not harm anyone, because there are many products that are made at factories with little to no regulation about the quality of work and by purchasing from higher end brands that are transparent about where the products are manufactured it can create a more trusting relationship between the brand and customer.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gucci obviously is not the most affordable brand even as a designer brand Gucci has prices unlike any others. With Gucci your buying the name, that is what designer is you pay the price because of the name. Also I disagree that pricing is due to the quality of the make because even if made with the most premium products and labor the price on the item is due to the name. Customers aren't paying thousands of dollars on one piece of clothing based mainly only on the fact it has a hair better quality than a nice non-designer item. The product obviously is not your average product it is top of the line but additionally overpriced to their buyers due to the willingness of the customers to pay for the brand name.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is a classic example of the failings of monopolistic competition; corporations can charge exorbitant prices for their products because of the manufactured exclusivity of the good; Gucci belt buckles aren't so much better than others; it's a scrap of metal, a tool, meant to be used. This illusion of premium status drives consumers to pay more for products across the board.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Over the years, Gucci has created a specific market targeting celebrities and people with higher income. They are able to raise their prices and still have a high demand for their products because there are people out their willing to buy their clothes due to the uniqueness of them. However, I don't agree that just because it is more expensive and not made in China that Gucci has better quality clothing. Becuase people are paying such a high price for their clothes, they will take care more care of them, leading to the longevity of it. Gucci is also similar to Supreme, another hyped up cothing brand.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gucci is a brand that is held to a high standard, and is seen as a top brand right now. The product may seem over priced for some, and the idea of spending thousands of dollars on clothing items may seem absurd. But the target market for Gucci is not to reach the everyday guy walking down the street. Gucci is able to take the target market that the company has created, which is the upper-class citizen that values brand and status within in society. From there, having the target market has been established the company; Gucci
is able to create a price that applies to the target market. For the group of people, and in the income that Gucci is looking to sell to, the price tag that is on the product is not out of the picture. The company is obviously, doing very well within its industry, since there is still such a high demand for the product, huge price or not. Therefore there has been no need for Gucci to reduce its prices, and I would assume that the multi billion dollar company does not intend to change the prices of their products any time soon.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Gucci is a brand that has high quality clothing, and with the purchase comes with status. For some, purchasing these outrageously expensive pieces of clothing may seem like a waste of money, but for others it's not. Gucci does a great job at knowing what their target market is looking for and that they are willing to spend the money. In the end, no matter the thoughts of others, Gucci is doing well within this industry and will keep growing their brand. Therefore there is not a need for Gucci to reduce prices, because demand will forever continue to grow, and supply will do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I thought you did a great job with explaining the materials that are used in Gucci products, because when I saw the title to this blog, I immediately wanted to know just that. I think that an important part to include could be how much the gucci material cost compared to other name brand clothing lines and how that correlates to the price that they are actually sold at. Because just having the name "Gucci" on front presents a lot of value, not just the materials used that makes it so expensive.

Generally he is a very nice guy, he ended it because he said we were arguing a lot and not getting along. He is right we’ve been arguing during the pregnancy a lot .After the break up I kept ringing him and telling him I will change. I am in love with this guy and he is the best guy I have ever been with. I’m still hurt and in disbelief when he said he didn’t have any romantic feelings towards me anymore that hurt me faster than a lethal syringe. He texts me now and then mainly to check up on how am doing with the pregnancy, he is supportive with it but it’s not fair on me, him texting me as I just want to grieve the pain and not have any stress due to the pregnancy.

  41. Although it is rare for us Wisconsinites to wear hautecore clothing, in many parts of the world, and even parts of our country, it is not. Part of the reason for this is because these types of stores don’t exist around us, whereas in places like California or London their consumers have easier access to stores like Gucci. In these places, people are more willing to spend large sums of money on high-end clothing or accessories, because ultimately you are investing in a Brand’s name. Gucci is able to sell their products at high prices because there is enough of a market that will spend the money to be a Gucci owner. Not only that, this company has built such a following that people who don’t have any Gucci products envy those who do, which builds up their consumer following even more.
