The Zlatan Effect

What happens when a superstar across 3 different leagues comes to the MLS(a professional soccer league in America)? Zlatan Ibrahimovic has won 13 player of the year awards, and 5 top goal scorer across all five of Europe's top five leagues, and believe it or not there are 55 other awards and titles he's won. On top of that a sensational goal on his debut, after getting subbed on in the second half, with a goal from 40 yards out to put LA Galaxy ahead. So what effect does he have on America and especially in LA?
After being the MLS for one year, Zlatan is the highest selling jersey in the MLS, after a great first season with LA Galaxy with 22 goals and 10 assists in 26 games. Within his first week of being with LA Galaxy over 10,000 jerseys have sold(Cornerofthegalaxy). This means that he truly means something to the city of Los Angeles. Supply and demand are important for LA Galaxy, and other businesses selling his jersey. In the MLS he has had the greatest impact since David Beckham in 2006. Since he has had 22 goals in 26 games, consumers want his jersey, and there is a high demand for his jersey, businesses will leave supply the same, or increase it based on the demand, but since the demand for his jersey is so high right now businesses can afford raising the prices, and consumers will still buy his jersey.
Not only does the jersey revenue impact LA, but there has been an increase in attendance, and tourism at a Stubhub Center. Attendance before Zlatan averaged just under 16,000 people, and with his arrival it averages over 30,000 people (Chase).Since the arrival of Zlatan he’s brought much tourism into LA, increase overall revenue and money circulation in LA.

Agastya Asthana,
ReplyDeleteI agree that Zlatan is a great player and I personally like him very much. I liked him better when he played for Manchester United. Anyways, Zlatan being a great player means people want to follow in his footsteps and would buy merchandise that associates them with Zlatan. My brother recently bought himself an LA Galaxy Zlatan jersey and is very happy with it. There are many others that would like to support him and the team by buying merchandise. This would have a significant economical boost both for MLS and LA Galaxy since all these people buying would generate a lot of revenue which could then be either donated to given to members of teams.
I've never really heard of this guy and not a soccer player but if so many people like is guy and you were a business owner and had his jersey ya why not raise the prices. Cause if so many people buy his jersey and the prices go up the people wont stop buy them do to a little price increase.
ReplyDeleteCrazy to think how one person on a soccer team can cause 15,000 people to go see their games. I don't know much about soccer at all but 32 goals in 26 games sounds pretty good. How much does each ticket cost to go see his team's games? With the 15,000 people increase, how much money has that gained them?
ReplyDeleteNow even though the stadium has gotten great business since he started playing, what else has happened? Well you can assume any restaurants and shops around the stadium or near it have had that same good fortune because people that didn’t buy tickets to see the game or just can’t afford it have started to visit local bars and restaurants to go watch the game with their friends and have a couple of drinks. So in all, Zlatan playing in LA has been for the most part a good fortune for everyone.
ReplyDeleteZlatan is a really fun guy to watch play soccer since he is so swift with his movements and I understand why he would have all those awards and having so many jerseys sold. Also, his name is very fun to say and would be cool on a jersey. If Zlatan moved somewhere else, do you think his fans would follow him or throw away his jersey and then the economy in
ReplyDeleteLA would crash. Finally, where does the MLS put all that money they are gaining from selling all those jerseys for Zlatan.
The MLS isn’t that popular in the US but with the addition of popular players they can gain attention and grow their fan base. If Zlatan has that big of an impact on their sales and fan base they should be making offers to other popular players to come play too. The MLS has lots of potential to gain popularity in the US they just need some momentum which they could get from other big name players.
ReplyDeleteThe MLS is a growing league. A lot more superstar players are coming here to play for bigger pay checks. It is also a different style of soccer which attracts older more veteran players to come play here before they would retire. More athletes are on their way to the US and this will bring in more money for the clubs and cities.
ReplyDeleteEven though the MLS is not that big in the US but it has been growing over the years. There are lot more players that are coming in for bigger pay checks This kind of soccer is a different style of soccer which brings in more and older players before they retire. This will help bring in more players and athletes and hopefully bring in more money for the clubs and cities.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Noah, the MLS has been growing bigger and bigger. Like NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who have had a huge effect on Wisconsin's economy, not only does Zlatan help California's economy but also brings an international presence. From the mark he has made on teams such as Manchester United and PSG, foreign fans come to the states to see Zlatan play. Talking and presenting statistics about how Zlatan impacted California financially would have helped enhance your blog quite a bit because of your in-depth description about jersey sales. However the content that you did have in your blog about jersey sales was very well done.
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy how just one player can make such a big difference in the sports community. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the MLS or soccer, but I have heard of Zlatan by just being a sports fan. This shows how important it is from teams to have a superstar player to represent their franchise so more people will be able to recognize their team and become a follower. This same kind of thing happened when Lebron James went to the Lakers. A lot of people knew about him before when he was on the Cavs since he is one of the greatest players of all time and played extremely well there, but now since he is in Los Angeles, everyone is a Lakers fan just because of him.
ReplyDeleteThe Zlatan effect is real. Any soccer fan can easily spot it. Zlatan brings public and media attention to the LA Galaxy, and that type of popularity isn't usual in the MLS. This is good for the american economy because it adds another major sports league to profit from, to an already existing collection of NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL.
ReplyDeleteI never knew that one player could effect the economy of a sport team so much. I never really connected the fact that one player can completely change the entire cash flow of a very large sports team. He is just like Lebron who went to the Lakers and completely changed the atmosphere of the team in general.
ReplyDeleteI heard about this guy over ESPN this summer and I assumed that it was a huge signing. And the economy of Los Angeles sky rocketed, it was already a booming economy for a city but getting Zlatan and also LeBron was huge. It draws in a ton of people, which then effects the demand for tickets, jerseys, merchandise, etc. The supply will also increase for the merchandise but that's a direct correlation to the demand also increasing. LA was already booming but they got maybe two of the biggest stars in the respective sports which only helps the economy boost even more.
ReplyDeleteHey everyone!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited. My ex-boyfriend is back after few months of breakup, I’m extremely happy that will are living together again. My boyfriend of 4yr just broke up with me and am 30 weeks pregnant. I have cried myself to sleep most of the nights and don’t seem to concentrate during lectures sometimes I stay awake almost all night thinking about him and start to cry all over again. Because of this I end up not having energy for my next day’s classes, my attendance has dropped and am always in uni and on time. Generally he is a very nice guy, he ended it because he said we were arguing a lot and not getting along. He is right we’ve been arguing during the pregnancy a lot .After the break up I kept ringing him and telling him I will change. I am in love with this guy and he is the best guy I have ever been with. I’m still hurt and in disbelief when he said he didn’t have any romantic feelings towards me anymore that hurt me faster than a lethal syringe. He texts me now and then mainly to check up on how am doing with the pregnancy, he is supportive with it but it’s not fair on me, him texting me as I just want to grieve the pain and not have any stress due to the pregnancy.
I was really upset and I needed help, so I searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Ahmed can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and I did it then he did a spell for me. 17 hours later, my bf came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I and my bf are living together happily again...

The US already has a lot to focus on like the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other small ones that people like to watch. Adding the MLS would be big because there are a lot of soccer fans in America. I have actually seen a few Zlatan jerseys here and there, so it is making an impact already.

ReplyDeleteWith the Rams and the Chargers both heading back to LA that increases a lot of their revenue too. Also with LeBron heading to LA that helps them as well. There are 3 different sports that are currently really helping LA right gain a lot of revenue. Zlatan was one I didn’t really know about but his impact and all the other sports teams and players moving to LA boosts the revenue of LA that much more. A lot of new jerseys have been made for LA fans this year to keep up with the demand of LA fans.
ReplyDeleteThe MLS as a whole is growing. More money is being put into the league and this is attracting older European stars. It is like if Brett Farve started playing Canadian Football. Although it does not seem like the MLS is a big deal here, I know from friends in Atlanta that there is much support for their team as the city were filled up the Mercedes Benz Stadium multiple times. I'm sure if Atlanta were able to acquire an European star, they would get even more attendance. One big star can change the way people look at a team.
Zlatan has clearly had a huge impact not only playing for the LA Galaxy soccer team but for the economy and local businesses in LA. With his great performance, many people are wanting to buy his memorabilia which is truly great for sports clothing sellers. With his fantastic performance and an increasing amount of people wanting to buy his jersey the prices could be increased to extreme measures and the demand would still be high for his jersey. Also, for local businesses- it looks great. When people fly into LA to come see him play they need somewhere to stay. This means they will most likely be getting a hotel. Along with getting a hotel, they will have to eat. Also with people most likely flying in to see a game, the airlines are making more money. All in all, Zlatan has brought increased revenue to the city.
ReplyDeleteThe MLS has never been big in the US and has not been known to be the best league so adding a player like him especially in LA you are destine to gain some popularity to your team and maybe even the league.I wonder how much they are paying him
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that one person can have such a big influence on the economy, it just just goes to show that anyone can make a difference in their community if they have a talent and put themselves out there. Zlatan is an incredibly powerful public figure that a lot of people look up to and it's no surprise that more and more people support him by buying his jersey. Not only is a great role model, he's good for business as well. By keeping a limited supply of his jersey, business can maintain a high demand from consumers and raise prices. This goes to show how powerful supply and demand is within an economy and how businesses can make a profit on athletes like Zlatan without them or the public even knowing. I agree that LA has become more profitable in terms of money flow and a change in production possibilities, but how do you think this would affect Zlatan himself and the amount of money his team makes?
ReplyDeleteIf I were the producers of the Jersey, I would definitely continue to raise the prices of the jersey because of the crazy demand for the product. With such a high demand for the jersey, people are willing to pay a great amount of money. If Zlatan started to play horribly, then no doubt the producers would fail with their products because everybody would start to buy less of products with the name "Zlatan" on it.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that Zlatan has made a huge impact on the Galaxy organization in Los Angeles, but how much money are the Galaxy actually profiting from him? How much does Zlatan’s arrival compare to somebody of another larger sport (for example, Shohei Otani of the L.A. Angels)? Also, I have found it quite interesting how much a single athlete can affect a city and business’ economy, especially for the MLS, a sport that is not too popular in the US.
ReplyDeleteI agree that very popular Athletic professionals can impact the revenue in a positive way. More people want to see him play since he is doing so well in the league. Since more people want to see him play, more tickets will be sold and there are only so many seats the stadium can put out so the ticket prices could also be sold at higher costs and fans would still purchase them. Also people want to support their favorite player so selling jerseys at higher prices would also effect the revenue because people would be willing to purchase these jerseys at a higher price.
ReplyDeleteThe Zlatan effect was a huge in the past year, but has it slowed down in the current day? I remember hearing non stop praise around him with his transference to the LA Galaxy, but currently I haven't heard about him in a while. Has the sales became less or is the sales and popularity around him the same?
