When is it a Good Time to Move Out?

When is it a Good Time to Move Out?
Written by: Ethan W.

I can almost guarantee none of us are gonna wanna live with our parents for too much longer after high school. I know for a fact I don’t. But some of us also don’t have the funds to buy our own apartment or house right away or even a credit score. Plus most of us plan on going to college maybe in a different state, maybe 20 minutes from where you currently live. Whatever your situation is none of us want to end up living with are parents for too long. Now let's say you have the funds and the credit to move out but you still don’t think you're ready. When is it a good time to move out?

They are a couple of factors that should be considered when deciding if you are ready to move out, Number one are you able to cover your bills? This one is pretty obvious if you aren't able to pay your own bills then you definitely shouldn't be moving out. Another key thing is do you have your debits under control? If you have a lot of debit and especially if you don't have them under control paying rent and utilities on, that would crush you financially. You also want to make sure you have enough income to pay rent. A good ratio to have is a monthly income that is equal to three times the monthly cost of your rent.

What age is a good age to move out? According to surveys a good age to move out is between 28-32. Now that seems like a long time and it really is. In reality there isn't a age you need to move out (even though I’m sure no one's gonna wanna still be living with their parents at age 32) as long as you are financially stable and have a good credit can afford the pay rent on time pay utilities and bills you could move out at 18.

  1. This was very to the point, I liked it. The points you brought up were good and its so crazy that the age the surveys say is that late! I feel like kids move out so much earlier than that. Good topic!

  2. I like it, you combined facts with your own thoughts on the subject wonderfully and people should really start making enough money in high school by getting a job and saving there money and they shouldn't have to be living with your mom and dad at age 32, that was a surprising fact most people moved out of their parents at about age 20 last time I checked

  3. I like this post because I alway thought people move out when they are 18 because they're going to college or going into the military. At the end I was surprised that most people move out in there late 20's to early 30's. Good post Ethan and topic!

  4. I was really surprised to find how late kids typically move out at. However, I do recognize that a lot of people our age are living with their parents longer because the costs of living can be steep, especially when you are still a student and also are going to have a lot of debt.

  5. I have two older sisters who have already begun planning for moving out in the near future, so this is a big topic in my household. Personally, I think I would prefer to move out a little earlier than 28. So based on that, it is never too early to start planning. Right now I can assure I create a plan to pay off debt and keep a good credit score, so when it is time to move out I can do so more easily.

  6. Many students live with their parents for longer than they should. If you are ambitious and have a stable income, living on your own or with your partner is very feasible. I personally plan to move back with my parents during summers off of college, as the majority of students do, as well as stay home for an additional year after college to pay off as much student loans as possible with a steady job. So, by the age of 23, I can go back to graduate school and get a job while not having to worry about as many student loans.

  7. I like how this post was straight to the point and provided some good ideas on when to decided if your ready to move out. It was very interesting to learn that most people don't move out until their late 20's to early 30's. I like how you provided ratio of monthly income to the rent to show people how much money they should be making compared to cost of their rent.

  8. I thought it was interesting seeing how late people move out. It makes sense because the cost of living is realtively high and hard for young people to afford. Looking at these ideas, they are very important to consider when deciding if someone is financially capapble of living on their own.

  12. I like how your post was straight to the point. I think it is important for young adults to have a plan on when to move out, and using credit scores as a guide can really help. I think the ratio of having monthly income be 3 times more than monthly rent is really interesting and very easy to understand.

  13. Believe it or not, this can help so many people. I didn't have this question in my mind until I saw your title, and you brought me in and really helped me out. Personally I'm going to a college that's really close to home, but I didn't think about when to move out. I agree with having to wait until I can clasp onto a steady and healthy economic status, and your point of not wanting to live with my parents until I'm 32 is definitely accurate!

  14. You had some great points involving credit, and a good ratio for monthly income compared to your rent, but I feel you left out some key things for young adults. When you become 18 your parents are more than likely going to make you do your own taxes, create a resume, pay your own insurance. There's a ton of smaller things in life that really bring someone down in financial terms. Besides a few grammar mistakes and some one or two missing key points, Great Piece!

  15. I think moving out can be hard for practically everyone, unless your parents just buy you the house and pay for it and you just live there. But for most people that’s not an option, and they’re going to have to struggle on their own at least for some part if they choose to move out. Therefore I think everyone that wants to move out should aim for 18, and then if that doesn’t workout they’ll still be able to move out sooner than expected.
