Las Vegas Golden Knights

Los Vegas Golden Knights
Brennan Moore
This year Los Vegas has added to their attractions.  They not only have casinos and the Hoover dam but as of the 2016 there was an approval of the Los Vegas Golden Knights, an official NHL team.  The team made its first appearance in the 2017-2018 season.  They’re doing extremely well in their expansion season.  With a record of 41 and 16 they are at the top of the pacific division.  They are expected to bring in many new fans in seasons to come.  The real question is how will a new NHL team impact the economy in Los Vegas?
Before the team got approved in 2016 they wanted to see if there was interest in an official NHL team in Los Vegas.  There are 632,000 local residents in Los Vegas.  Which created over 14,000 season ticket deposits.  There are over 14,000 people in line to get season tickets for the Golden Knights.  Los Vegas already has 39.2 million tourists each year.  People come to go to the casinos and have a fun weekend.  With an NHL team thrown in the mix it could bring in a different crowd of people which would bring up the amount of tourism in Los Vegas.
If the Golden Knights get a new crowd in the door at Los Vegas the impact to the economic could be huge.  Tourists spend on average around 5 billion dollars at the casinos each year.  Some people might not want to travel just to go to casinos.  However, those people might be willing to travel to watch an NHL game.  Once they get to Los Vegas they can choose between 150,000 hotel rooms and 23 casinos to spend their time at when they are not at the hockey game.  The reals question isn’t if a new NHL team will impact Los Vegas, it’s by how much it will impact Los Vegas.

  1. I think that it is interesting that a hockey team would want to move into an area where hockey is almost nonexistent as they live in a desert. But it is pretty obvious that the gamble to move them there is working out as the teams games have been sold out for the most part of the season, and they have one of the best record in the NHL.

  2. I like how you listed some of the tourist attractions and then talked about how Vegas was getting another attraction which is going to be their NHL team. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Las instead of Los. I liked how you put in some number statistics to show who is interested and how if people didn't want to show up for the casinos, they might show up for a hockey game

  3. Although Las Vegas brought in a new NHL team, Hockey is the #5 ranked sport in the United States. This move was a huge gamble by Las Vegas and I don’t believe it was a good one. Las Vegas is not a “Hockey City”, large amounts of people do not play hockey in Vegas or even watch hockey. It is strange that they chose a city in the south to start a new team with because Wisconsin does not have a Professional NHL team yet they are ranked much higher than Nevada for the states residing NHL fans. A different sport may have been more beneficial for Vegas, plus they will be soon bringing in the Raiders so that will have an economic increase for the city of its own.

  4. Las Vegas is a prime spot for a hockey team. They have many tourists visiting everyday so if they advertise right, that is a lot of potential fans they could earn. And more fans means more money. Also, I believe it is Las Vegas and not Los. You could be thinking of Los Angeles. Lastly, take out the "the" or add the word "season before 2016 in the first sentence.

  5. I think it’s interesting that Las Vegas added a new attraction to their city. There are a lot of people that vacation there to see the entertainment and gamble, but now they can go and see a new hockey team as well. I think this can only better the Las Vegas economy, getting more money from people to see the new team, and the hotels bringing in money from those there to see the team.

  6. I think it is interesting that the hockey team is doing well in Las Vegas. This is the first team in the major sports to have a team there. With the Raiders moving their next NFL season I can imagian the revenue created by them will be very high. The fans in Las Vegas obvious want teams and they will spend a lot of money on them. The tourism in Las Vegas will grow because of the NFL.

  7. Having a team in a place with a great deal of entertainment is a great idea, people will be happy to make a trip to a LV Knights game a part of their vacation to las Vegas helping the entire area. Their fans will probably be satisfied with the experience and return. The addition of a Football team will bring in fans year-long.

  8. I think it was a great idea for Las Vegas to have their own NHL team. Not only is Las Vegas one of the most popular cities for tourism, but their team is actually performing well. I was very surprised by this because most new franchises in any sport rarely ever perform good in their first few seasons. IF the Las Vegas Knights were able to win the NHL championship in their first year, it will be great for Las Vegas.

  9. Hockey is not a widely-watched or popular sport in the United States. I think it is interesting and a good idea to have a team in Las Vegas as it is such a popular and well known place to travel to. Although, when I think of Las Vegas I generally think of "the strip" and all the casinos as the attractions in Las Vegas. It's interesting to read that they are having their own NHL team. This will bring in revenue, customers (fans) and an even well known and good rate for Las Vegas. Like stated, "With an NHL team thrown in the mix it could bring in a different crowd of people which would bring up the amount of tourism in Las Vegas," which I think will be very good for the economy.

  10. I think another interesting thing to note is how the success of the Knights has affected the casinos in Las Vegas, and how this could lead to more sports in Las Vegas. Due to the Knights unforeseen success, Vegas has lost millions on the many Las Vegas tourists and natives who come to place bets on the hometown team. While this loss may be painful in the short term, the increase in betting will likely bring a push for more mainstream teams in the Sin City. With the Raiders joining in 2020, will others follow?

  11. I think the that it was very smart for Las Vegas to add a hockey team as during playoffs the attendance will soar and cause an increase in city traffic which will most likely attract people to bars casinos and other businesses around the city of Las Vegas.

  12. Although hockey isn't a particularly popular sport in the United States, the city of Las Vegas has been longing for a major sports time like the Golden Nights. Because of a lack of professional sports teams in the area, i'm sure they will be very popular. In terms of attracting tourism I don't think the hockey team will be solely responsible for a lot of economic gain for the city. What would be more plausible would be fans of other teams coming to Las Vegas for the casinos and catching a hockey game because their favorite team will be playing that evening.

    1. I agree with Liam completely on this one, when it comes to the economic boost that Las Vegas is going to see through this new hockey team. Like Liam said, I think it is extremely interesting to see how a sport other than the power three sports (basketball, football, baseball), can transform a city economically. In this day and age people are constantly looking for new sources of entertainment and this hockey team in Las Vegas fits the demographic perfectly.

    2. The amount of hype and following that Las Vegas brings in, the demand for a major sports team is just inevitable. Especially because there are no current major sports teams in Las Vegas the potential amount of fans the Golden Nights could bring in is a lot. Also on top of this the Golden Knights are winning a lot of hockey games which winning always increases and maintains demand. It is all about getting fans in the stands especially in sports.

  13. I think that not only will this decision to add a team will boost the Las Vegas economy, but it could also be a money maker for the NHL. Like you said, people may not be willing to go out of their way to catch a hockey game, but if they're in town, they might as well grab some tickets and watch, which may create some new fans of the sport. I thinking placing a team in a tourism hot spot was a great choice for both Las Vegas and the NHL.

  14. I agree with you and I believe that this new NHL team will have a big impact. Not only will it attract more people to the city, people that normally wouldn't go, but it could also create new hockey fans. If people are in town and have nothing really to do, it would be a fun change of pace to go watch a hockey game. The fact that so many people go to Las Vegas each year will ensure that the team gets plenty of tourists coming to watch. I think it is a great decision for Las Vegas and the NHL.

  15. It is kind of interesting how they are using their fame for casinos towards their new hockey team. They already have a steady flow of income from tourists coming for the casinos, but maybe if they are already there they will have an interest in stopping at a hockey game for a change of scene. It seems like an odd city to have a hockey team; however, if the numerical predictions foresee a profit by adding an NHL team, then all the more power to them. It also may increase the attraction to Las Vegas and bring in more income than they already are getting from the gambling crowd. It also will give the residents of Las Vegas a chance to have a professional sports event to attend to and might give kids the opportunity to try their hand at a new sport.

  16. This article is very interesting because I never thought of hockey as a tourist attraction. I agree with you that the decision to create a team in Las Vegas was smart, but with more tourists comes more demand for hotels, restaurants, a stadium, and much more. Although this team will bring in a large variety of people, Las Vegas will have to accommodate to even more tourists than they have now. But, ultimately this could be an economy booster.

I was very surprised by this because most new franchises in any sport rarely ever perform good in their first few seasons. This could even lead to more income for the city and bring more attraction to it since most people might be sceptical about going to Vegas after the shooting.

  18. I agree that los vegas should have an hockey team because it could bring more people to los vegas. It could help them get more tourism and help people have more fun.

  19. I believe that by forming an NHL team the economy would benefit because there would be more games, more tickets sold therefore more money going into the economy. Las Vegas made a great decision by forming a team because there are so many tourists that visit with lots of money looking for entertainment.

  20. Las Vegas as always is in a really good economic spot. Adding the hockey team is a great addition to the city. That team will once again be another major attraction for Las Vegas, and not only does it appeal to the locals, it appeals to all hockey fans across the country. With Las Vegas’ attractions already, adding another is only going to help, and when looking at the current ticket sales for the team, and what’s in store for next year, you can only imagine the increase in revenue and tourism that is soon to come. And now it’s not just the ticket sales that will help boost the economy, all the food purchases during games, merchandise sales, and other variables that can keep adding up to the increasing economy of Las Vegas.

  21. I definitely think that the NHL team in Las Vegas will have a large impact on current regular tourist and future tourists. There are a lot of seasonal tourist for Vegas and an NHL team will give them more to do and it might lengthen their stay so hotels and restaurants will also profit. For people that don't usually come to Las Vegas this will give them a reason to finally make a trip and maybe they will stay longer for the other known attractions.

  22. I think that the addition of a hockey team in a city that hasn't had the most success is kind of risky but the main issue other teams have had was the fact that they just are not very good. The fact that this team has had a very impressive season puts a new spin on the risks in creating a team in the area. Instead of having a bad team, more people will want to go out with friends to watch a team they know will put on a good show. With this being said there is a lot of potential for growth within the franchise.

  23. I think that an NHL team in Las Vegas will definitely impact the amount of tourists the city has. The city already has lots tourism, and bringing in a sports team would definitely add to that. Since many people are willing to travel to see their favorite sports team, and Las Vegas is a city with many other activities to do as well, people would be more willing to travel out there for the weekend to see a hockey game and spend some time out there.

  24. Las Vegas will most definitely be impacted by a new Las Vegas team, and in great quantities too. Since Las Vegas is known for gambling and it's wonderful casinos, a new hockey team is sure to bring in tons of new tourism and drive revenue through the roof. It's interesting to me that you wrote about this because I had no idea that there was a new hockey team in Las Vegas.

    1. While I think that this article makes a lot of great points and has a well constructed argument, I'm skeptical on how effective a hockey team will be at drawing in new tourists. Las Vegas already has a huge culture of tourism based in it's gambling and warm environment, so adding a hockey team may not be a significant enough change to drastically impact tourism in Vegas. Not only that, but most people aren't going to Las Vegas for it's cold weather sports. Hockey is very popular in cold places like Minnesota and Wisconsin because it's already cold, so people might as well take advantage of it. Adding a hockey team in Las Vegas might have the same impact of adding a beach volleyball team to Pewaukee.

  25. This was a really interesting topic because I had no idea that this even happened, probably because I barely follow sports. I think this will be very good for the economy because not only are people living near or in Las Vegas likely to attend games, but also it is a very touristy area so a lot of people visiting may be interested in seeing their team. With the more people coming in, there will be a bigger demand for everything else that goes along with a trip.

  26. I agree that the addition of a NHL team would positively impact Las Vegas' economy. It will only add another attraction to the area besides the usual gambling. The addition of the Golden Knights will help the business in the area all together. Some people will come for the game then end up gambling, others may come for the casinos and end up gong to a hockey game.

  27. I agree with you that the attraction of a hockey team in Las Vegas' will have a substantial effect on their already enormous economy. People will undoubtedly go to games and tourist in Las Vegas will probably take some time to go watch a hockey game as well. Also you have to imagine the amount of revenue all the team merchandise, concessions, etc will also bring in, so overall they're set The Knight are set to have a very positive impact on the Las Vegas economy.

  29. It is interesting to me how much of an impact sports can have on the economy; people love various sports so much that they will fly across the country to watch their teams, sprinkling spending all the way from airports to restaurants to hotels. Las Vegas provides another appealing way to spend money while on a trip, but will locals attending the games also be taking advantage of this?

  30. The creation of an NHL team in Las Vegas was superior idea. Seeing that Las Vegas already racks up 5 billion US dollars from casinos a year, adding this professional team may not only bring more adults to spend their money, but their children who are major NHL fans too! Having such an increase in tourism in just one year would greatly improve the area and provide not only the city, but the state of Nevada to receive an increase in revenue to also improve conditions of roads, schools, etc. One questioning factor about this change is whether or not this new NHL team would even be good enough to attract a large fan-base. The only thing to do is wait and find out!

  31. It sounds cool that Vegas is adding a sports team. Aside from the usual attractions like casinos having a NHL team could boost their economy. The tourism brought in from having sports teams could bring different types of people to Vegas. Thus, attracting people who wouldn't go to Vegas usually.
