World Without Waste

Ethan Reinke

Coca-Cola, a influential monopoly that has gradually taken influence in our society as a whole for over a hundred years. Spanding way from just manufacturers of soft drink beverage; The company's goals have undergone some changes in the recent year. With electing a new company president and chief operating officer. Furthermore, the initiation of the World Without Waste initiative has caused the company to pursue the environmental preservation movement. With the initiative, Coca-Cola states that they will try to achieve that they will recycle one bottle or can that is produced by them. For every product that is sold by them. Not only is this pursuit in recycled products a recent development, this has been shown through the companies joining of global partnerships, introduction of a new technology “PlantBottle” to be used throughout the industry.

Meaning, with the introduction of this new goal of using more recycled bottles for soft drink products in the Coca-Cola Industry. This change would not only help to improve, pollution occuring in the world. Do to the fact that the Coca-Cola company resides in selling products in 193 countries around the globe. Meaning every single country in the world sells Coke products except Cuba and North Korea. Than by taking into the account of having 1.9 billion drinks produced by the company consumed per day. With the integration of the World Without Waste Initiative not only would we as a society be able to reduce the amount of plastics and cans being used per day by a landslide. Meaning if Coke accomplishes it’s recycling goal by 2030. We as a society would be able to recycle and reuse over a billion drink containers. This goal wouldn’t just impact the Coca-cola company. It would impact the entire world. With the reduction in cost of making soft drinks, which would also result in other companies in the business like Pepsi and RC Cola to also pursue the same goal.

This is do to their need of competition. So, if Coca-cola is able to produce products cheaper and at a more efficient rate, they would be able to sell their product less resulting in increase in overall profit.  Which will lead to the change in the market as a whole. Meaning, we as consumers will be able to profit from this through, reduction in price of soft-drinks, and less pollution of can’s and recyclables in the environment. Just from the change in a single company as of Coca-Cola, has the potential of not only shifting the market economy of plastic production, and commercial beverages as a whole. It will also play a huge role in the change of tendencies we as people use recyclables, and the future of environment of the planet.

  1. This is a very interesting strategy for Coca Cola, but it is very smart. They could be doing this just for the benefit for the environment, but the biggest selling point was probably the massive growth the company would experience weeks to follow. Yes, it is great that they are recycling, but they are also selling products at normal price, when they have made it much cheaper for their products to be made. This will cause a drastic increase in their revenue and make the monopoly even larger than it already is.

  2. Our world is in need of a change. Without a doubt, the waste that we expel is becoming increasingly dangerous to our environment. It is very inspiring that such a large company is making changes to help save our world. Yesterday I read about a clothing detergent company that is changing all of their plastic bottles over to recycled material. I think that a lot of companies are afraid that they will lose a large amount of money if they switch to sustainable material, but if a few large companies can make the switch, then every other company should be able to as well. In the long run, it will be both economically and environmentally beneficial for the company and the world. Hopefully this change will spark a wave of change within both the minds of companies and in the minds of the consumers. If consumers choose to support environmentally friendly companies, then it will force their competitors to become sustainable companies as well.

  3. I agree that Coca Cola is doing something like this. It's such a drastic thing that's needed for our environment. The pollution that is around is so drastic and causing to much damage, it's super inspiring to see a massive company like this taking steps to help. I truly feel that one step like this that's taking place, will ended up leading to a growth within all businesses but also helping show people what to do. This will be a giant domino effect because more will want to follow this norm.

  4. It is really encouraging to see big companies making efforts to reduce their impact on the environment. It doesn't really matter what their motive is. We need to start putting the technology in place so going green is cheaper than the previous methods. This will provide the economic incentive companies need to make the switch. At first these changes will be more expensive but over time as the infrastructure changes the price will lower and hopefully allow more companies a chance to choose more environmentally friendly methods of production.

  5. More of the world is beginning to care about climate change and the environment as a whole. Therefore, not only is it noble that Coca Cola is attempting to actually recycle this many bottles and cans, but it is also a huge advantage that they can take over their competitors. Consumers are always looking for something to relate to in a company, they buy products that they believe are the best, especially for soda, as many people will debate whether Coke or Pepsi is better. However, now that Coke is taking this environmental initiative, people may believe more that Coke is trying their hardest to make a better world, and feel more inclined to buy their product, because they see something they can relate to. In addition, because America had pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords, many independent people or companies have tried to almost "make up" for the fact that our government is not willing to spend much of the federal budget on the environment. For this reason, some more environmentally friendly consumers look for a company that has a noble goal of recycling more and doing better for the environment.

  7. I agree, Coco-Cola is one of the largest growing soft-drinks company and that brand makes everyone feel special. Sodas are the favorite drink to drink for many of us due its high fructose and as we know Coco-Cola produces more than a one million sodas every years, which requires a lot of plastic bottles and as people finish drinking it they do not recycle instead the either throw it in the water on the walk streets and I think Coco-Cola needs to come up with an idea that decreases their plastic bottle use. Also I feel sodas a bit expensive and the price goes up as the size of the bottle decrease and I think they should make price more reasonable to attract more consumers towards their products which would increase their demand and satisfy the consumers.

  8. This is a really good step for the company and our collective society to move forward with recycling efforts. I did just read another article recently that explained why recycling can get to be so expensive which brings in another perspective and highlights what we still need to change. It talked about how all the stuff we recycle is incredibly dirty, and to get the recyclables ready to be reused, they have to use resources and time to clean them. Our society needs to clean our recyclables better in order to make the recycling process more efficient. The problems is, our society is generally very lazy, and recycling companies are afraid to ask more of Americans, in fear that it might make them quit recycling altogether.

  9. Living zero waste can significantly impact our society, economy, and most importantly, our environment. New conversation about about global warming and preserving our earth, has inspired many influencers of the millennial generation to alter their lifestyles. Living zero waste means utilizing nothing that needs to be thrown away, everything is recycled or composted. This can greatly impact the plastic industry and could ultimately revolutionize the way that food and products are packaged in the future. This change also leaves room for new innovations that can create new jobs in the future. A New York native has made a successful business for herself, selling products that can be utilized in a zero waste life - something that many others aren't doing, quite a good business model. Using plastic less can impact our way of living immensely, and can save our planet, and ensure the health of future generations.

  11. Trying to keep pollution levels low is very important for everyone and when companies take the initiative to help this problem it may find the customers want to buy more of their products because they agree with the movement they are starting. This makes their company more noticeable which means they can produce more of their products effecting the company in a positive way.

  12. The World Without Waste initiative that the Coca-Cola company is implementing will definitely peak the interest of consumers, especially with the increase in awareness for pollution and “save the turtle” campaigns. Since part of the initiative is to make the packaging 100% recyclable, which will help aid the current world-wide environmental problems, I wonder why Coca-Cola didn’t take this initiative sooner. The most logical reason would be that the costs of production increase with this new packaging. However, with predictions that by 2030 Earth will be uninhabitable if we don’t make a change, the extra cost of productions far outweigh the cost of adding more pollution and waste to the environment.

  13. Prior to reading this blog post, I was actually unaware the Coca-Cola was involved in any initiative like this one. I like the direction they are heading in for the future, and I am glad that a big corporation, such a themselves, are taking part in this environmental movement. This will most likely influence other big businesses and corporations to take part, which will spread awareness about taking care of our planet. Lately, almost everywhere you look, there seems to be increased amounts of attempts to try and save our Earth: Reducing plastic use (straws, bags),reducing time spent in a car (gas emissions) and more. While people can organize these movements, it is critical that the word be spread in more ways than one. Coca-Cola needs to continue this initiative, and strive for more improvement in our environmental efforts.

  14. This is a great strategy to help with the environment and the economy. If Coca-Cola starts decreasing their prices of their drinks this will make them a huge competitor in the market. More consumers will start buying from Coca-Cola since their prices are cheap. Other soft drink companies may start to do this as well in the future if Coca-Cola starts to bring in more consumers and revenue so they are able to compete with Coca-Cola. Now that climate change and environmental issues are becoming more of a discussion in our society, consumers are looking for companies that are making changes to be more environmentally friendly. The only issue is that recycling can start to become highly expensive. So we will also have to find out ways to decrease the prices of recycling. This strategy that Coca-Cola is going to try is great for the environment and the economy.

  15. One important point is that bottles have decreased significantly in mass over the years; they have been using less and less plastic because it means less resources and a lower price, but the side effect is that there is less plastic used in the product. The other examples of cost cutting methods would be a lack of waste treatment and unfiltered smokestacks, but in this specific case there is an external benefit to cutting costs.

  16. This is a good idea and strategy to reduce plastic and waste as it is really a larger issue. I am glad people are becoming more aware. I think that is makes sense to reduce coca cola products, however the demand would still be high, so perhaps if they start to utilize different packaging. For example, starbucks has come up with the reusable cup. If you purchase one, you can bring it any time you want coffee and it takes 10 cents off of your order. Meanwhile 10 cents may not seem like a lot, it's money and it adds up. When people hear a deal, they want to go with it. So if there is a change in packaging and perhaps some sort of discount, demand may go even higher and we would be helping save the earth at the same time.

  17. Coca-cola isn't a monopoly they are a large conglomerate with many smaller company's working underneath their umbrella however the title of "monopoly" is saved for firms that have a product with no substitutes. The type of market coca-cola resign's in is monopolistic competition. With this is mind the reason why the price isn't dropping is due to consumer demand not changing. Reducing the cost of production will allow the company to have more flexibility when it comes to supply shifts. The social benefit gained from using less plastic in the product is greater than the private cost of using less plastic. With this in consideration if we buy coca-cola products over competitors. Then more soft-drink manufactures might consider using these environmentally beneficial initiatives. However, most people don't decide on what soda they're going to buy on the environmental impact of the soda container. So to convince firms to try and find cleaner ways of producing their goods we must show the value of these actions by buying these products.

  18. This is a very interesting move on Coca-Cola's part as a company. This decision portrays the company in a more positive way. The consumers will feel much more open to using more of Coca-Cola's products due to the ecological impact of plastic being decreased. This also will reflect well on consumer tastes today due to the current attention on the state of the environment. This will also help the economy on the long run due to the positive impact it projects by minimizing the trash it creates that cannot be recycled. The biodegradable material will leave less of an environmental impact as well as a negative economic impact.

  19. I agree that Coca Cola should recycle more. This will help the environment. Also by recycling more this will help reduce the pollution around the world. Since, this soda is world wide, increasing the amount of recycling, this will help the company to reuse the recyclables and help them save money by reusing products. Overall, recycling in this industry will have a positive effect on the society and the environment around us.

  20. Coca Cola should recycle more especially because it is a large company in charge of other popular soda brands like Dasani, Powerade, and etc. It would help improve the environment drastically since it is one of the leading waste providers. Also, they could find other ways to reuse the plastic whether it be through reusing them for their products or selling items made of their plastic. I would improve the economy through standard of living too.

  21. The World Without Waste Initiative is an amazing opportunity to shed light on an issue most of the public only vaguely knows about but is typically too consumed in their own lives to respond. About 25% of recycling that is picked up by waste management companies goes to landfills because it has been contaminated. The fact that Coca Cola is standing up and promoting recycling and not letting this huge issue sweep under the rug is highly admirable, especially since there was likely a significant cost to switch to fully recyclable bottles. As a consumer that is compassionate about the environment I am glad that this huge, big box company is trying to promote this environmental cause, because ultimately we are depleting resources and hurting planet earth far faster than we think. People will likely also switch over to Coke from competitor brands such as Pepsi because of these efforts, ultimately boosting their sales.

  22. This article really highlights the true power of a large monopoly. It’s interesting that only 2 major countries in the entire world don’t sell Coke products - who would have known that their influence is so vast! It is questionable, though, how they would prove that they’ve met their goal. If one bottle/can is recycled for every bottle/can that is produced, how could that possibly be tracked? Also, how could Coke really be in charge of that when it seems like the consumers’ responsibility? Just because they make their products recyclable and just because there are recycle bins provided throughout the world, doesn’t necessarily mean that people will use that to nature’s advantage. It is true, though, that by such a large company taking such a definitive stance, it will likely include other companies to do the same, and hopefully increase awareness and eventually make the world a better place.

  23. Having a large company such as Coca-Cola take a step at helping the planet and our society like this to try and get people to recycle more, treat the planet right, and push for it so heavily is brilliant. It takes someone to step up and do some work to make a big change, and Coca-Cola taking a stand and making a change is a big first step in helping pollution and saving our planet for the future. Soon people and other companies will follow in their footsteps, and it will become a snowball like effect. Coca-Cola taking this big of a stand on this issue has resulted in a lot of press, which we can only assume has helped their business, making it even more likely that other companies will follow behind them. It truly is a win win for everybody. Because Coca-Cola made this strategy and decided to come up with this idea, there is no doubt that other companies will have to start something like this as well. If it truly does become something big and works really well, it will only result in something great, and looks like nothing terrible can go wrong from this move. They are saving the planet, teaching people to recycle more and save the Earth, while also getting press and better business because of it. Everyone in the end truly wins.

  24. The implementation of new environmentally friendly policies by Coca-Cola has many benefits. First and foremost the World Without Waste movement will help clean the environment of Coca-Cola cans and bottles. This will benefit the ecosystem as plastic and glass materials negatively impact plants and animals, including humans. In turn, this gets the public’s attention about the pollution crisis that we face today and consumers will be more likely to recycle Coca-Cola products, and may even implement recycling in their daily lives. This is also an effective marketing strategy by Coca-Cola as it gets publicity to their company which can result in more sales. I predict that more companies will follow in pursuit in Coca-Cola as pollution will continue to worsen.

  25. I believe that what coca-cola is doing with their recycling pledge, will have a huge impact on the world. You talk about how “coca- cola has 1.9 billion drinks produced by the company consumed per day.” With also how us as a society would be able to reduce the amount of plastics and cans, which for everyone, is extremely important. Although coke is independent with this action, by pursuing this pledge, it will inspire many other companies and people to do the same. It’s good to see one of the first companies doing this which is one of the largest companies in the world.

  26. I do agree with you that we do need to take action to help with the world's pollution and that Coca Cola taking an initiative is good. However, I don’t think this alone will substantially decrease the amount of waste around the world. First, Coca Cola using reusable bottles is a great idea, yet it requires us as civilians to actually recycle. I am personally guilty of this, but when you're done with a bottle or can and there's no recycling bin around, you’re not going to hold on to it to recycle it when you get home you're just going to throw it in the trash. So for this to work you would need to get a lot of the population to take time to recycle. Americans are known for their fast paced life, so even by telling them they have take time they could be using to make more money, or to sleep just to recycle to recycle, I have a feeling many Americans won’t do this. Secondly, I am not aware of any of the statistics backing how much it costs to reuse something, but isn’t quite high? Due to the fact that they have to pay money to transport, clean, and sanitize these used containers to reuse them?

  27. I think this goal is worthwhile in the long run. We need big companies (like Coca-Cola) to encourage recycling and to make a change for the planet. This idea can potentially shift the market economy of plastic, as stated in the article. They're going in the right direction if they effectively produce products cheaper and quickly because it would increase their profit and allow success for the overall goal of bettering the world.
