Big Bucks for Milwaukee
Anna Cottrill
We Wisconsinites are very proud of all of our sports teams. No matter where you go around town, it is pretty much a given that you will see someone supporting the Packers, the Brewers, the Badgers, or the Bucks. Right now, we are in the heat of the Bucks’ journey to the NBA Finals, and that is bringing a lot of attention to our city. Many people from all over come to watch the basketball games, which has had great economic impacts on the city of Milwaukee.
The big economic changes that have occured in our city due to the Bucks’ playoff presence has been in our tourism industry. People from all over the nation have come to Milwaukee to watch the games at our newly established Fiserv Forum. This means that there has been an increase in hotel guests, thus bringing in quite a bit of money just from staying overnight in Milwaukee. Additionally, these basketball fans have been spending money on food and beverages while in town, and not to mention utilizing the many forms of transportation that our city has to offer. Finally, the fans need to have gear to support the team, which increases the demand for Bucks memorabilia. In all, it was estimated that each home Bucks game brings in about $3 million to our city (fox6now.com). In fact, if (or rather, when) the Bucks get to the NBA Finals, Milwaukee will be looking at about $12 million brought into our city.
It is important to note that not only does supporting our Bucks help them win, but the proceeds spent during these events help our city grow and prosper. We know that increased economic activity by consumers means that our whole economy will grow. By having visitors from other cities, as well as our own fans attend the basketball games, our city can grow economically. This growth can help ensure that the city’s living conditions and job opportunities continue to grow and improve. On May 9th, Mayor Tom Barrett stated that there is a potential to host a parade for our beloved team, as well as increase the publicity for our city.
In conclusion, our beloved Bucks have been stirring up quite a bit of attention for Milwaukee. Giannis and the rest of the team are responsible for driving up the sales of sports memorabilia, and bringing in fans from all over. Each and every home game is bringing in a large sum of money, which helps fuel Milwaukee’s economy greatly. The farther the Bucks go in the playoffs, the more money our city will acquire. Let’s cheer on our Bucks and bring more money into our economy. Go Bucks!

The newfound tourism has greatly impacted our state’s income and the city of Milwaukee’s. It’s really crazy to think that a sport season could have such a large impact on a state’s money generation. This is not only creating more money to fund our teams, but to help renovate the city and allow for more advertising to bring in more tourists. Tourism is a huge part of a state’s income and revenue and this sports season has really stirred up an increase because the demand to see these teams play is so high. I also think that this could pose potential problems in our city like higher rates of crime or higher ticket prices. Every positive does need to have some negative to it, but in this case, I think the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of attention that Milwaukee is receiving from the Bucks’ success is just incredible, and it makes me incredibly excited to see how exactly the city is going to be able to use its economic success to expand, repair, or advertise. I don’t really know how economies within huge cities work, but I have a feeling that if our sports teams, with the Bucks leading the way, keep having great success and keep bringing in loads of tourists, Milwaukee is going to be amazing in the coming years. Of course, this huge economic success could all go away after the NBA season, but it is sure to still bring in at least a few families who want to see the city of their favorite basketball team.
ReplyDeleteThe new source of income for Milwaukee is very good for the city. It is exciting to see what else they can bring and how it will help us. The one thing is, do you think the new source of income will help the city somehow? Whether it is through the source of income or the possibility of new jobs? And the more attention the bucks receive, the more likely prices of bucks merch and tickets will increase leaving most wisconsonites in the dust of new found fans from out of state or even country.
ReplyDeleteThe attraction the bucks have been gaining in the past few years has been insane for the growth and prosper of Milwaukee, especially being a much older area that has been modernizing lately. The Bucks run in the playoffs is not only increasing revenue for the city but also attracting more people to the area which in turn will create a more positive outlook on Milwaukee which will hopefully create more tourism in the upcoming years. The more attraction Milwaukee can gain from the media the better the city is as a whole for an economic boost. But, the only other downside is crime rates possibly occurring as there are so many tourists with lots of money obviously which may create a bad outlook.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very easily relate-able read. Its crazy, so many high school student's and young adults who are in college have been going downtown every game to watch the game at the outside set up. This was so smart for them to build since they have people of all ages coming to get together and watch the game and they have surrounding businesses such as food and drinks so that those people can get those. That makes those businesses a good portion of money since some people might feel the need to buy these things since they are so available. The attention for this team right now is crazy! Great read.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that the Bucks are earning more and more economic profit due to merchandise sales, ticket sales, and sponsorships from big name brands. What I would like to know is how the playoff games are affecting the economy in both helpful and adverse ways. Sure, more and more consumers are spending on food, merchandise, and ticket sales, but I would also like to know the adverse effects of the playoffs. Maybe less money is generated by other industries other than the basketball industry as an effect of more and more people watching the playoffs after the team from their city has advanced to the next stage.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Bucks success has created such good buzz for Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general. Bucks merchandise sales have skyrocketed and this is due to the red hot success of the Bucks. I hope they continue to win as the economic growth for Milwaukee is doing wonders for the city.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that the Bucks are earning more and more economic profit due to the stuff they sell and the ticket sales. The sponsorship from name brands. I would really like to know how the playoff games are affecting the economy? I get that there is more consumers spending money on food, merch, and ticket. Maybe there are other industries that are losing money due to the basketball industry because more and more people are watching the playoff games.
ReplyDeleteIt is evident that with the new arena and the Bucks playing well that tourism will grow in the Milwaukee area. Now that money is being brought into the area, I wonder where exactly where this money will be used? As a whole the Bucks may be bringing in $3 million per game as a total between transportation, tickets, food all over the city. So is each individual business being positively impacted or will school systems and other non directly impacted systems be positively affected as well? Therefore it is obvious that the Bucks will help the economy in Milwaukee, but I wonder if we can get even more specific in looking to what this economy boost will do.
ReplyDeleteThe increased success, specifically that the Bucks have made through their journey to the finals, has obviously created a great economic increase for our city, and state. $3 million is a substantial amount for us which is amazing however, that is only the Bucks. With having a successful baseball team just in this year, I'm sure that has improved our overall economic impact as well. So far, great year for Milwaukee sports, and Milwaukee's economy. Hopefully with continued success, this growth will continue!

ReplyDeleteI agree that the bucks have been earning more money than ever due to merchandise sales, ticket sales, and sponsorship. I also think the economic boom this has caused for the city has been great due to the bucks.I would love to know how much money the bucks have really brought to the city of Milwaukee and I would also like to see the rate of change from a few years back. Great post and a good read.
ReplyDeleteThe Milwaukee Economy has been doing quite well these last few years with the brewers going far last season to now the Bucks being able to make it to the NBA finals. I do agree with all of the hotels for guess and the money for tickets we are earning a lot of money. With all this money that we are bring in I hope that we are using it for a good deed. I hope that our economy is smart with the money we are making because looking at the long run there could be years that our sports team's aren’t doing good and if that were to happen then what would we do?
ReplyDeleteBucks in 6. You’ve heard it everywhere. That just shows you how much hype the bucks are creating in milwaukee and with the new Fiserv Forum, there’s even more. There is so much economic benefit from the bucks this year like you mentioned and it’s not even just from people buying tickets. It’s people going down to the deer district to watch the game and drink and have fun. It may be free to go to the deer district but it isn’t free to buy a drink there or buy a shirt.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that the Bucks playing well and investing in the Fisorv Forum are both great moves for Milwaukee. The new arena is a great attraction to not only local citizens to go explore it, but incoming guests from other teams. Sports are such a great part of our culture, consumers want to buy things to be immersed in the hype and merchandise and ticket sales, food/drinks at the games, among other profits. Another contribution to this is also the Brewer's success, another attraction bringing in profits, putting Milwaukee on the National Map. Not only does sport success increase profits within those industries, but the newfound tourism increases the housing market and people wanting to live in the area. Not only that, but businesses want to establish themselves here because of all the opportunities associated with the recent success.
ReplyDeleteI entirely agree that the Bucks are positively affecting Milwaukee and our entire state. Not only is this helping the Bucks, but it is also helping other teams from Wisconsin like the Packers and Badgers. The audience realizes the greatness involved in wisconsin athletics and the fans, so they switch over to follow our teams. As a result, tickets are bought from fans around the country increasing our money supply to positively affect the city and state.
ReplyDeleteThe success of our Milwaukee team has brought a lot of revenue to the city as a whole. From hotels to tickets to restaurants, everyone is benefiting. Would we still be benefiting this much if the bucks made it to the finals every year? Would everyone be excited to see the bucks in a post season game if they played over 10 post season games every year? This year benefits the economy a lot but who knows if it will continue it constantly.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Bucks team has brought huge success to Milwaukee, and is attracting more and more fans with the new arena. People from other states are coming to watch games, which increases the money supply. It is amazing how each home Bucks game brings in about $3 million to our city, which is a major benefit to many businesses like transportation, food and hotels.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy that the Bucks are able to impact Milwaukee that much by playing in numerous post season games. Even when the Bucks aren't playing at home in Milwaukee at the Fiserv Forum, they are still positive effecting the city of Milwaukee. For example, when the Bucks play out of the city, the forum holds a Bucks watch party outside of the arena that attracts thousands of people to Milwaukee. Overall, the Bucks have been unbelievably amazing all year long and fans have been attending games from all over the world. This superb season has definitely been one for the books and will be remembered by all Bucks fans for a long, long time.
ReplyDeleteI agree that with the Bucks being so good this year and with many people wanting to come to Milwaukee to watch the Bucks it really has help our economy grow. The demand for the people wanting to watch the Bucks has increased a lot which also means the supply for tickets and seating has to increase as well due to the increase of the amount of people who want to attend this big event. Not only that but it also helps hotels in the area because they will now have more people staying there. Also the supply for food will have to increase as well due to the fact that more people will be attending the game and more people will now be buying food.
ReplyDeleteI've never thought of sports being a benefit to our economy, so this was interesting for me to read! It's crazy how much supply and demand is around us. When the better the bucks do, the more there is demand for fans to see them play and then the more ticket supply. And it is a good way to make money because prices may rise due to the increase in demand to see the bucks play. Overall I agree with your statements in this season benefiting the economy.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that a city's growth can rely so much on the success of a team. As we've seen in past years, as most sports teams go through fluctuating records, the Bucks weren't necessarily a large competitor. However, now that we have large figure like Giannis, more attention is brought to Milwaukee. While Milwaukee isn't a tourist reliant economy like Rome, for example, small businesses, restaurants, and hotels still rely on new customers waving through the city. It will be interesting to see what that money earned through tickets will go towards. Since we just got a new stadium for the Bucks, maybe back to the city? This has been a great season for not only the Bucks, but for Milwaukee businesses.
ReplyDeleteWith no doubt the bucks have boosted Milwaukee’s economy, with tickets to see the games, vendors and buy merchandise. By far the entertainment business has been one of the biggest money makers, not only in the United States, but worldwide. It has allowed people to connect with others and share the love of watching a sport. The bucks has brought the community together and has raised awareness for many situations within the area. With the entertainment business we have established money to help the situations and grow our community. The Bucks have built people together and helped others meet new people.
ReplyDeleteThe tourism due to our sports teams (Packers, Bucks, Brewers, etc.) have definitely had an impact on our economy. The arenas and attractions, especially in Milwaukee, have brought a lot of revenue. As stated, it was estimated that each Bucks home game brings about 3 million dollars of revenue to Milwaukee. Thanks to major sport's fans, many travel just to see the games. I also agree that besides the fact of money being spent on tickets, a lot of revenue is coming from transportation, food, and more around the city. The sports games have surely made a positive impact on our economy by attracting people--not only from Wisconsin--but around the nation.
ReplyDeleteIt is very easy to agree with this piece as the Bucks do bring in quite a large amount of money to Milwaukee and the Fiserv Forum is used for so many different events during the year. It’s interesting to think that perhaps if the new stadium was built somewhere else, would Milwaukee still be as popular or is the Fiserv and the Bucks such a large part of our city that Milwaukee would turn into just another Wisconsin town? Sports and entertainment are such a large part of the culture now that impacts us greatly and it will be interesting to see where it leads us even farther in the future.
ReplyDeleteAll the attention that Milwaukee has gained from the Buck’s successes is ultimately a very good thing for our local economy. Every business can gain from the increased tourism, including small businesses and restaurants. By boosting the sales of everyone, not only the large hotel chains and the stores selling merch, the city as a whole gets an economic boost. Many people tend to think of just those larger corporations gaining money, but the smaller businesses attract people wandering around the city, waiting for the game to begin. The tourists also need places to eat, and possibly grab a drink, so in general, everyone gets an increase in sales and productivity. It’s a great thing that the Buck’s got so far, which is something everyone gained from happening. Thinking towards the future, this is probably only gonna aid Wisconsin as a whole if our sports teams keep doing better and better each year. It’s interesting to imagine what could happen when next year rolls around.
