A Superstar's Value to a Local Economy

Brandon Davis

Have you ever wondered how an superstar impacts a city’s economy? It has been founded by the Chicago tribune. Since Khalil Mack was traded to Chicago’s ticket sales have gone up by an extra 10%. He already impacted the economy just because of his guaranteed 60 million this year only is added to the US and Chicago’s GDP

Aaron Rodgers has done the same for the green Bay Area in 2015 Aaron Rodgers earned and raised over a million USD in just local endorsements in the Wisconsin area.  He’s made over 138 million $ in the NFL  alone which is a big boost to Wisconsin’s earnings and also the US GDP.
The bar graph to the right represents the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s economic impact. If you look at 2001 and then up to 2015 the bucks economical revenue has been steadily increasing since 11-12.

In conclusion as many in sports like basketball, football and baseball each team has some very good talent on it. With that talent comes them being payed to do what they do in that sport. And in doing so they all bring income to the state with ticket sales . The millions of dollars athletes are paid all goes toward GDP. Question is how much does your favorite athlete help our economy?

  1. How would it hurt the economy if a certain team had nothing but terrible players on it? People wouldn’t want to go to games, which means ticket sales would be down, concession sales would decrease, and overall there would be a lack of interest for the sport in that city. Which teams in professional sports do you think are in this crisis right now? I would say that it is happening in Brooklyn, NY or Cleveland, OH for basketball. They are not very good teams and there has even been some talk about how they could get beaten by some of the top tier college basketball teams which is sad.

  2. It's cool to see how a single person can impact the economy so much. In addition to the economic growth they cause wherever they go, they also cause major economic downfalls when they leave. The superstars or sport players usually bring in many tourists or people to watch their games/performances and tend to cause economic growth around them. But this economic growth quickly vanishes when they leave.

  3. That is insane how much those numbers are going up and how much those players have earned. The question I have is, “Is it good that the GDP is going up or no?”. I ask this because if the GDP is going up from just a few people, then to the government it makes Wisconsin look like they’re in a good position. But what they can’t see is those living in poverty and those just barely making enough money to be out of poverty. Is there some way we could show the different spots of GDP, like showing where the high earners are and then those barely getting by.

  4. Also superstars are probably more important for small market teams like the Bucks or the Packers because Wisconsin is smaller compared to all other larger states like California and Texas. So while the superstars help smaller economies it might be better for the superstars to sign with teams that have a larger market so that their brand has more demand and can bring in more profit

  5. It's crazy how a couple players or even just one player can have the impact they do on a economy. The fan base that these players bring in is crazy too because a team could suck and then they have a new superstar to base everything around and they could have a packed stadium again.

  7. Yes the bears did receive khalil Mack this year but the bears are way better then they have been in previous years so maybe the success of the team has to do with it because since the packers have been trash this year ticket prices have gone down a lot. Also if the bears had khalil mack and where like the bears any other year (trash) I bet there ticket sales would not have the significant increase they do now.

  8. I do think that superstars definitely affect the city in a sort of domino affect for the most part however that is only if the superstar can make the team win. Cities typically don't support losing franchises regardless the presence of a "Superstar". For example the hornets have one of the best PG in the NBA in Kemba Walker however continuously have record low sales. The bears attendance is most likely up because of their rare success this year and maybe due to the Bulls being absolutely awful, not only because of Khalil Mack.

  9. I agree that one player can be the face of a whole city especially if there is only one or two teams in the area. If it is a city like LA where there is multiple teams per league the player can't change much, but in a small town like Green Bay, everyone thinks of Aaron Rodgers when they think of the town of Green Bay.

  10. I agree with this because we have seen it as Lebron James has moved around the NBA. Now that he has come to LA you see the spot light back on the team. A super stars ability can effect the local economy by bringing in a positive season that is able to bring money to the city through hotels, food services and other amenities.

  11. One player can impact the income of the NFL or NBA majorly. This is seen with very popular athletes because many people who love sports want to see them live at the stadiums. Also young kids who admire these players will want to buy their jerseys or t-shirts which increase profit in the stadiums for the city.

  12. This is very easy to agree to as in Wisconsin we have two local superstars in Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers, and Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. These superstars are virtually the face of the brand, and with their fame, comes more profit for teams. Sometimes teams in professional sports will sign a player with big media impact over an equal skilled player, just to direct more marketing towards them.
