Apple or Android?

Apple or Android?

The rivalry between Apple and Android products in the past few years has skyrocketed. With any Oligopoly there will always be a side as to which each person leans towards; Coke or Pepsi, Google or Microsoft, Apple or Android. Even though facts can say that one is better than the other, people can always fight for a reason there opinion is better. This is the way that Android and Apple consumers have been for quite a few years now.
Although Apple may have 90% of the profits in all smartphone sales, Android has sold more products than Apple by 913 million phones this year (Zeman). But many people choose to select Android over Apple solely because of price per unit. The iPhone can range from $650 to $950 per unit whereas you can find some Androids for around $200. Androids have almost all of the same capabilities that iPhones do but they are cheaper. Therefore people choose Android just due to price per unit.
Another factor on choosing Android over Apple is the overall look. For a long period of time Apple kept their screens at 4 inches or less while Android had screens at least 5 inches. This caused the consumers to choose Android over Apple. As soon as Apple started to increase the size of their screen the demand started to raise for Apple products. Many people that used Android did convert but still not enough to make Apple dominant in sales. Another feature that caused the demand for Apple products to increase was the fingerprint sensor. No Android product can ever have a fingerprint sensor due to copyrights. (Kovach) Android soon got around this by substituting a fingerprint sensor with facial recognition and that increases the competition between companies.
Overall, people say Apple is easier to use with the ability to get apps first but Android is more cost friendly and has more gadgets. It may never be settled as to which company is better than the other but for now, consumers will just wait for the new technology to make the next smartphone better than the last.

  1. Although the phones are similar, the iPhone seems to have more of the publicity and fame. Because of their prices, the Apple phone seems to be more a of normal good, when income is at a stable rate, while Androids are the inferior good. Also Apple has better brand recognition which allows the company to charge higher prices. Even if an individual doesn't favor the iPhone, it is impossible to deny Apple's success in it's field.

  2. I feel as though iPhones have better brand recognition than Androids. To be honest, I cannot name one Android phone/ product off the top of my head, however, I could name close to all of the iPhones and Apple products offered in the market. I also see a lot of product placement of iPhones in movies and shows nowadays which is another area that I feel Androids are lacking. Because of the growing popularity of iPhones and their dominance in the market, I wonder how this will affect Android's promotional and marketing strategy. Will they focus more on getting their name to be as big as Apple's or will the continue to be less and less thought about and recognized? Ultimately, this could even cause them to drop out of the business, way far out in the long run.

  3. I never knew that Androids sold more phones than Apple, but it makes sense since the phones are so much cheaper. Also Apple is better known in my opinion because more people know about it. Although the iPhone is expensive many people are willing to pay it therefore the price will never decrease, due to the willingness to pay by consumers. Overall I believe that even though Android has sold more phones Apple has more profit because of the high prices which evens it out more.

  4. I thought you did a great job with your post differentiating these two companies and their products! When I was trying to decide what phone to get a couple years ago, I searched for months and went back and forth between Android and Apple. I was leaning towards Android because the price was lower, as you stated. In the end, I decided to purchase an Iphone because I was used to the Apple system from our computer which was easy to manage. It is interesting to see what phones other people use at school. It is rare to see someone at school who has a phone other than an Iphone. This contributes to the fact that Apple has 90% of all the profits of smartphone sales. I am interested to see what kinds of phones people use in years to come. Great article!

  6. I didn't know that Apple has 90% of the profits in the industry. I found this very surprising because I assumed that the profits were split more evenly. Although I do believe that, it also does make sense how the profits are split when you think about it. It seems that every year Apple tries to introduce more phones and gadgets than Android does, which could be a reason on why Apple gains more profit. Another thing is that it seems Apple has more brand recognition/loyalty. For me, I have never been able to buy an Android and I honestly don't know why. Overall, your post was very interesting, but I do wish you would have added a picture of a phone from each company to compare them.

  7. In my own opinion, I like Apple better than Android only because I use to have an android and all it did was crash on me and not work, now that I have an Apple Iphone, my phone never crashes and it works perfectly fine. Apples are obviously more popular than the Androids just because Apple keeps coming out with new Iphones all of the time.

  8. Any one who things Androids are better are wrong. My friends and I have this battle all the time and the Apple argument always ends up on top. Apple is just easier to operate and just more sleek of a phone. All Samsung's look the same.

  9. It was surprising to hear that Apple has 90% of the profits in the industry. I am not surprised though that Android have more sales because Apple is just one company while many companies make Android phones like Google, Samsung, and LG. Also a lot of the new Android phones do have fingerprint sensors so they must have found a way around the copyright.

  10. It's surprising how just having a lower price can cause the demand for Android to be so much higher than Apple. However, despite the larger price, people will still demand iPhones much more than any Android device. You'd think that, with such a lower price, that Android could easily dominate the market.

  11. While Apple may have much better brand recognition than Android, it can't be denied that many times Apple overall creates an inferior product from a maintenance and development point of view. If your Iphone were to experience a problem at most, you could wipe it and and reload things hopefully not losing much data, or you could send it in to an Apple tech. Android on the other hand allows theirs users much more freedom to create troubleshooting applications and the ability for experienced users to actually fix the problem themselves in some cases.

  12. I knew that there was a rivalry between these two, but there are many new topics here that you covered. Apple and Andriod seem to be in a very small and competitive oligopoly. It seems to be a race to meet the demand for consumers and have the best phone. Personally, I believe that Apple is better, just because it is convenient, but it's shocking that with the release of the iPhone6 this year that Andriod still sold more products than Apple. However that could be changing very soon because the supply of new Apple products seems to be increasing every year with their release of so many new gadgets. There has been an increasing amount of apple products in advertisement, movies, etc, so I wonder if that is causing Andriod to lose some of its consumers and revenue, and if this will continue in the future of if Andriod will begin to level the playing field.

  13. This is a great example of an oligopoly. In my opinion, it seems like everyone around my uses an iPhone, so I was surprised to hear that Android has sold 913 million more phones than Apple this year. Right now, it seems like the choice is between price and quality. If people want to save, they get the Android and if people want an easier to use phone, they choose Apple. Do you think a third firm could ever be created that satisfies both needs?

  14. I have had a android a liked it at the time but once I got my iphone i loved it so much more than the android phones that I had before. I also didn't know that Apple has 90% of profits in the industry I think that this is surprising because I kind of thought it would be at least a little more less than 90%. I never really thought that androids were too popular but everyone has their own opinion about whether or not apple or androids are better. I think that your topic was very interesting to read!

  15. It's crazy to think that apple has 90% of the profits, that is a much more skewed gap between apple and android than I was expecting. I guess apple does come out with a lot of new products that keep consumers always wanting more.

  17. iPhones are virtually everywhere. And Apple itself has a much better marketing strategy than Android. I personally have chosen and iPhone over and Android and it's simply because of the iPod. All of my music was now able to be on my phone and I could ditch the iPod and have only one technology device. This is something the Android can't really ever live up to. Yes, it is said that Android phones are manufactured much better and are more durable than an iPhone, but iPhones have that Apple background. And Apple is a more common thought of franchise than Android due to the numerous amounts of devices they sell and market.

  18. Even though I like apple much more an androids, I was surprised that they have 90% of the profits. I feel like many people have been choosing androids over apple lately because of all the new apps and technology they have. Personally, I think apple is easier to use but I also agree that the demand for androids is increasing.

  19. I think this is an interesting topic because of the fact that people are always going to be fighting over which is better. I choose to us apple products because I have thousands of songs on my Itunes account and I don't feel like having to start over, and even when people say that Iphones don't have as many gadgets, they are partially wrong. A simple jailbreak can fix that, but it also does void your warranty.

  20. I was really surprised to hear that Android has sold more pones than apple this year especially because the majority of teenagers I see have an Iphone. I think however with the increasing amount of Apple products and advances to their products Apple will eventually sell more than Android.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Apple versus Android is probably the most well known oligopoly in the world because brand recognition is world wide in any country that has technology advanced enough to have smart phones on the market. The main trade offs between the two phones are apps and screen size. Consumers have to consider marginal cost to marginal benefit when they look at Apple’s high prices and apps compared to Android’s lower prices and bigger screens.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It surprising to see that 90% of the profits are Apple. But I believe that Apple products are much better and they are easier to use. Android is such a good company that I can see the type of competition that are around these to companies. Everyone seems to forget that not everyone likes these types and some prefer a windows phone which is also easy to use but more complex than what we everyone thinks it is. Overall this topic was very interesting because but I do wish there were a lot more topics base off the technology that are used today.

  23. I figured that Android sold more phones than Apple just due to the price, but I never knew it was more than 913 million. It's interesting the way you compared the 2, because I would have never thought of some of those things, but I do wish you put up the price it took to manufacture just 1 phone for each, since I know Apple mades their phones pretty cheap and then sells them for a lot of money. I didn't know that they had copyrighted the sensor though. It's interesting to learn that, since I do with there was the sensor on the Android. I guess in the end though, we're all lucky to even have the phones and the latest models, because a lot of countries don't have the same privilege.

  24. I have had an Android Smartphone for about a year now and I can strongly say that I would choose Android over Apple. You bring up a really good point with comparing the prices between apple and android. Apple does have some unique features however, I believe that it cost way to much than android and with the advertisement they are able to convince consumers to buy their product. Apple has a feature called siri I think that the more they enhance the technology they will be back on the market again. Overall you brought up a great topic and it was definitely an attention grabber.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The price per unit I think is the most important part for a product. If apple wasn't predigested priced and was trying to offer cheaper products, I think that more people would buy Apple than android. There will always be people who think that one product is better than the other no matter what price or features.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Really good topic, overall it shouldn't really be a question people just like what they like. I've had an i phone for over a year and it finally went downhill yesterday and just stopped charging. All though I like the i phone, I'm thinking about switching to an android just for a breath of fresh air.

  27. I find it very funny that androids can sell so many more phones yet be losing in the profit margin between apple and android. It's a clear cut choice though if you are choosing a phone, it's apple. Have you ever watched someones snap chat story when they have and android it's annoying because the quality of the video is so poor I want to rip my eyeballs out throw them on the floor then proceed to delete the app. What I am getting at is that androids are a lot cheaper because they made cheaper and this is why they are not making as much profit. Apple can sell their product for a lot more and people will buy because they know they are getting a quality product.

    ReplyDelete
  28. A huge factor in choosing Apple vs Android is what comes with it. For example, it's easier to use Apple because their products come with things people already had before they had an iPhone such as itunes. iCloud and Apple pay have become very popular in recent years also which increased demand for Apple. There will always be people buying Androids because they are significantly lower in price. The competition between these two products will never end, which can be good for buyers because that means we will always get the new updates and gadgets that come with their oligopoly competition.

  30. I was really surprised after reading that androids are now selling more than IPhones. Apple has been at the top of the phone market for awhile and it's clear after reading this post that Android has caught up. I feel like I see Apple users much more commonly than Android users. My parents love androids but I prefer Apple products. I bet most of the Android users are adults whereas most of the Apple users tend to be teenagers and young adults. Interesting topic!

  31. I have always had Android phones and I have bough an IPod in the past and I never use it because I do not like Apple products very much. I will probably never switch to Apple unless they come up with some better ideas. Apple products cost way too much for the features it has, Android almost has the same features but is way cheaper and have more features like larger screen and mine is waterproof which is cool. Most of the features are the same in the phones so the choice is just based on peoples preference to what brand they like. It is interesting how many more phones Android sells than Apple because Apple is such a popular brand, but there are a lot more selections for Android phones than Apple does.

  32. There are many reasons as to why someone chooses to go with apple or android. However, I believe the biggest reason the apple name has grown is because people jump on the bandwagon and go with whatever brand everyone else has. Many people assume that they are getting the best product because everyone else has one. Android has come along way and has been making more changes and improvements to their phone. Androids tend to now have better screens, faster processors, better cameras, removable parts such as SD cards for unlimited memory, removable charging, and new waterproof models. People are now realizing these huge improvements and are jumping off apples bandwagon and moving over to android.

  33. This is interesting; I thought Apple always sold more products than Android, just because Apple is more well known and supposedly higher quality (which I can only infer from the higher prices). There is definitely a trade off between the price of each product and the special features each phone has. It comes down to how much the consumers are willing to pay, and both Apple and Android are always trying to come up with the best new idea to increase demand for their brand, and as a result increasing the cost. As consumers we can tell that the products have similar features: large screens, voice commands, personal recognition, and easy access to the internet. However, it all boils down to the consumers' preference.

  36. Personally, I have an iPhone just because it's easier to maneuver. I've tried switching to an Android, but I've just gotten so used to the way that Apple products work that I don't think that I can ever go to the other side. I think many people have this problem; Apple has been so prominent in our lives that we're not used to anything else, so we're basically stuck using their products.

  37. I knew that Apple was a brand that was more recognizable than Android, but I didn't know that Apple was responsible for 90% of the profits in the industry. Even with the cost of Apple being significantly higher than Android, Apple has done an excellent job of advertising and brand recognition which in the end showing the results of having 90% of the profits in the industry. I would personally prefer Apple over Android because of the user friendly processing system and the ease of using their products. It seems that Apple's innovation is more modern and by its sales it shows that its the top company in this industry. Overall, this was a great topic to bring up to show the comparison between Apple and Android and how to two companies differ and go back to back on trying to get the upper hand over the other one.

I always though Apple was the superior but I would have never guessed that they have 90% of the profits. They can attribute that to their high brand recognition from all of their snazzy advertisements, and high quality products. Despite costing significantly higher, myself and many others will always be willing to fork over the cash because they are worth it. For example I am writing this blog comment on my iPhone right now.

  39. It is important to consider the ways these companies advertise. Certain methods may appeal to certain people, that could account for sales just as much as price and features. I feel that consumers will generally go with the product that is more popular, which may skew sales even further in Apples favor.

  40. The benefit of having an oligopolistic smart phone market is technological improvements derived from the fierce competition to be the dominant firm. Were the industry a monopoly, there would be little incentive to improve the product. But because there are competing firms, each one needs to differentiate its product in a superior way to win over consumers.

  41. Although the initial price of apple may be outrageous, you also have to consider the loyalty programs. Apple has made it possible to get a new phone for as low as $1, if you can find the right contract. Android has it's set price that doesn't change, which is where many people tend to lean towards apple as their phone of choice.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is definitely a widely disputed argument. Many opinions are developed from personally owning either an iPhone or Android. However, as seen in Oligopolies their advertisement is also a strong pull for customers. iPhone seems to push harder on their advertisement than Android, while Android focuses more on pricing. Apple's choice of high profits can be seen as a trait of a monopoly, while Android is more efficient.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think you picked a great topic that applies to basically everyone. I found it interesting to learn about the different sales and marketing techniques to apply to different people. I think iPhones are a source of status and that is why people keep buying them because they want the latest and coolest new thing. More customers will go to apple to status, and I am one of those people. Unfortunately andriod will never make as much revenue as apple due to status and appeal.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It seems as if apple is sold just because it's apple. It shows how powerful name branding products can be. There are multiple phone companies that operate with Android such as Samsung and LG. So if you really think about apple might not sell as many units as phones the operate with andriod however they might sell more units than just the LG of just the Samsung phones alone. An there are a lot less variety of phones to choose from when you buy apple so it might be the fact that you have a lot of phones using one system selling more units that a couple phones using another.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is a great topic to talk about because it's interesting, and impacts most of our lives. I found it interesting that Apple has a better sales profit just based on the cost of the product. Being an iPhone user myself I don't disagree with you when you say the iPhone is a more simple device. Overall the paper was fun to read and I learned something new.

  46. This is a very interesting article and relevant topic to read about, especially with news of the iPhone 7 having no headphone jack; I assume there will be an even bigger decrease in the amount of sales and demand that Apple already has if they choose to forego this plan. I wonder if the customers reviews and complaints towards this new 'bluetooth' wireless headphone set that is supposed to go with this phone will make consumers even more angry with the company, and thus have them turn to android phones (which provide the same services!).

    ReplyDelete
  47. I admire that you kept your opinion out of your article, most Apple users, as you said, will fight anyone to death with the pride they have in their phones. Also, its intriguing how "No Android product can ever have a fingerprint sensor due to copyrights" but I know that Apple cannot use swipe text because of the patent that Android has. I'm curious to see if Android will someday be able to make a comeback using their patents to compete. I find it strange, also, that there is such a wide distributed phone oligopoly, one receiving 90% and the other 10% sales.

  48. Your post was appealing to me because I am team IPhone and could never see myself with an Android, even if they are cheaper. I do pay for my phone monthly and the costs are very high, but it's worth it. I was very surprised to see that Androids sell more phones than Apple because Apple is more known and advertised more frequently. However, it makes sense because the phones are more cost friendly. As mentioned, the iPhone is expensive, but many people are willing to pay these prices because they know the price will never decrease because the demand is so high. When looking at the stats, Android has sold more phones, but Apple has overall more profit because of their high prices. I am curious to see if Apple's prices will increase or decrease over time as more, advanced Iphones come out.

  49. As someone who is just now getting a modern phone instead of a black berry, this post really appealed to me. The closest thing I have to an smart phone is my iPod gen 5, and I do like it, but I'm going to go with android for my next phone. Apple seems to sell because of its name. Although it handles things quite nicely, android phones do the same thing for a lot less, and while looking more stylish. At least, that's my opinion. Otherwise there are a few apps that I would love to get, but only found on androids, and the apps on both markets are often less expensive on androids.

  50. Owning an iPhone has become a new form of social currency; you have access to iMessaging and new emojis, along with the Apple brand name attached. Apple has marketed their product in a way that has made any other phone obsolete, causing them to have 90% of the total smartphone revenue. Additionally, even though they have a significant price difference, people are willing to spend more on an iPhone because of their aesthetically pleasing appearance and innovative software updates each year.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The fact like Apple makes 90% of the profits in smartphones sales is startling but not that surprising. Everyone has an iPhone, and I mean everyone. Every single one of my friends both in Wisconsin and Georgia have iPhones. I know, probably, only 5 people at the most that have an Andriod. They are increasingly popular and have become even a necessity for some teenagers. My Uncle and my dad both have Andriods and they love them. They say that you can do so much more stuff with an Adriod and it has better camera quaility (which I've seen myself). I thought this topic was very well chosen because of it's ability to relate to the audience (high school students). My question is, why does everyone have an iPhone and not an Andriod if they are so much better? Is it just because that's what everyone has? If iPhones were cheaper, would literally everyone have an iPhone?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I did not think about the very specific details that go into choosing Apple over Android. Mostly when people think of choosing a phone they only think about what is popular and what is in style. Some people would agree that Apple is a easier device to use over Android just because it is a more popular more well know brand and they may have had another Apple product in the past. Another thing to worry about is the price and deciding if you want to pay the extra money for a Apple iPhone or cheaper for a Android. Either way whatever decision you make it will always be your personal opinion of what you like more.

  54. Personally I think Android is the better company. Android has the better phones and wider selection of phones. Also Android phones are more durable. iPhones are known for being made out of "strong" glass, but in reality if you dropped an iPhone on its screen it is more than likely going to crack or shatter the screen. When there are Android phones that can be dropped multiple times and not have a scratch on the screen. Every time I get a new phone I always test the durability of my old phone. My last phone I had was an LG Realm and I paid $60 for it, I dropped it from 5 feet 3 times nothing happened to it, then I took a hammer to it and nothing happened until I turned around the hammer and used the the spiked part for removing nails. This proves that Android phones are made stronger. A phone for $60 that is that durable compared to a $600 phone that is known for its company, which one would you choose?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have an android and honestly, to add to the argument I think its better than an iPhone. People argue that with an iPhone that once its jailbroken its the god o gods of the phone world and yes you might be able to a little more than an android but android phones are pretty much jail broken to begin with. Android phones may get apps later than apple but android in the end is a higher quality phone.

    ReplyDelete
  56. As an android user, I cannot stray from supporting this company. Although Apple's products are considered the hierarchy of cell phones, they are extremely expensive and out of reach for lower classes who need technology to keep up with the advancements. iPhones also tend to be extremely breakable and are not waterproof. By having such problems, they repeatably charge customers to pay to repair or replace. Androids on the other hand are quite indestructible, of course if you purposely hit it with an hammer, it will surely break, but it you drop it on the floor it will not shatter. Some versions of the Galaxy are waterproof, allowing the customer's to have an opportunity to buy a longer lasting phone, thus being more in demand. iPhones may have a better camera to improve your selfie game than the Galaxy or HTC, but the life span the Galaxy is significantly greater and will save you a lot of money.

  57. I feel as though, apple has a strategy if making more items that act as complements to the iPhone such as the high-tech headphones,a camera attachment etc. Android however has the more price flexibility Android might appeal to those who have loans or heavy bills to pay off. As Android reaches out with cheaper prices and keeps up with apples desirable complements then Android might win the race.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I like that you were able to compare two companies that largely dominate the cellphone world, like you said they are an oligopoly. It amazes me that Apple gets away with charging such high prices as Androids essentially have the same features of the Apple device yet charge reasonable prices. One would assume that two devices that serve the same use with the exception of a few things, people would always choose the cheaper item. However I think consumers are attracted to the futuristic modern look of the Apple, which causes them to ignore the Android and pay the extra couple of hundred dollars. Overall nicely written, at times I felt it mostly compared the two companies versus relating to the significance that it serves to the economy or economics, I felt like more could have been related to effect this has on supply and demand: as well as generated profits and maybe a future prediction of the companies sales as new models are updated each year.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think the debate about which product is better will never be out of the question because society is pretty much divided into two about based on the cell phone they use. Apple is more which many people go towards android. Personally I have never had an iphone and I have never liked the product. I do agree that Apple is a competition and it harder for Android to dominate them because Apple is in such a demand for their higher tech advances. It all depends on what the consumers rather have because both products are basically the same.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It is interesting that Apple has most of the sales but Android has sold more phones. I have an Iphone and I feel like the apple products are easier to use. Also Apple seems to do more advertising for all their new fancy specs on the phones and tablets. The only downside to Apple products in the higher price. I think Apple will continue to make more money over android in the years to come.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I never would have realized that Android has more sales yearly than Apple, especially speaking of the popularity of Apple vs. Android. I do understand that the demand for the product only will go as far as people can pay, but still with 90% of people saying they prefer Apple, your article shocked me. I wonder what effect features like iMessage and FaceTime and Group Messages have on the preference for Apple. It would be interesting to know. Overall, great job!

  62. It's interesting to see the debate between two providers of a commodity that most people can't live without. It seems that people make opinions about what type of phone is better by personal experience, because if you had a i-phone in the past, you are more likely to buy a newer one. Apple was the first in the market, which explains why it is the more popular brand. If apple continues to charge higher prices and android continues to expand its influence, I can see android become as popular as apple in the future.

  63. I think there is a big difference between Android and Apple that you are missing. This that Apple's operating system is only available on iPhones whereas Android operating system is available on a wide range of devices which, as you mentioned, also range in prices. This being said Apple has an exclusive/luxurious characteristic that Android phones do not have. Furthermore I believe a comparison between Apple and Samsung would be better as they are both smartphone producers rather than only an operating system.

  64. I think this was a very interesting topic and as a personal user of both androids and iPhones I can say that I found iPhones more luxurious. The difference between operating systems is a key component and it is interesting how iPhone users are constantly moving to the next version while I feel android users typically stay with what they have and don't rush to move on to the newest version.

  65. This is an extremely well known controversy. Personally, I lean toward Apple because I have had an iPhone for quite awhile. I think they are more user friendly. They are also always on top of the newest technology. While they are extremely expensive, I think they are worth the money. Many of our world today has evolved around the Iphone. Mobile pay, different apps, and connecting with people who soley have Iphones. Because of the rave reviews Apple continues to have very loyal customers always awaiting the newest arrivals.
