College Athletes should get paid

College Athletes should get paid
Written by: Braden Servais

One of the biggest debated topics in sports is “Should college athletes get paid”. A Big part of the college game is replica jerseys, sometimes the price ranges from $65-70. Wouldn't it be more fun and realistic to have an actual name for that jersey?

College athletes should get paid because they put their bodies on the line each game there should be an award for that and when they are in competition they do not have time to get a job to make money. Another reason why they should get paid is because it would help create financial awareness within the student athlete many of these athletes develop poor spending habits and this would give them a chance to learn those things.  Also within there team they could learn on the side how to spend there money better. A reason why college athletes are not getting paid is because recruiting would not exist it would all be about the money just like it is in professional sports. But I think they need to get paid because the time commitment with athletics and school there is not much time to get a job. The final reason why students athletes should get paid is it provides incentive for athletes to play  some athletes do not want to play college athletics because it is time consuming and this would also get more people to play. and they do not get an award for playing.

  1. Although this is an interesting point of view and it was fun to read, I feel that college athletes should not be getting paid other than in scholarships. Scholarships can even be full ride meaning that students will graduate college with no debt and enter the real world on a better note than most others; therefore why should they be paid a salary to play a college sport?

  2. I think this was a very interesting article to read. I agree with Sky, I also think that college athletes shouldn't be getting paid besides their scholarships. I feel like college athletes play the sport because they enjoy doing it, therefore they probably wouldn't need an intensive to keep them playing the sport. However, you did a good job stating your claim and a good job with this article.

  3. One thing that is important to remember is that College athletes already receive forms of compensation. They get scholarships, free gear, free access to training facilities, free dorms, free food, etc. In fact, if you get a really high level college athlete, they will have minimal to no expenses. It is for this reason why I think College athletes should not get paid, because they already receive adequate compensation.

  4. When this topic comes up I think often people forget that at the end of the day, college athletes are just students that participate in an extracurricular activity. Yes, their activity of choice provides money and publicity to their schools. But realistically, the athletes that are pushing hard to get paid for their sports are almost always in school because of scholarships given to them to play their sport at their college. They're not being taken advantage of, they're already being more than compensated.

  5. I completely agree that college athletes should get paid but their should be a limit for how much they are being paid and it should be a very small amount of money. I think this because most college athletes get are eating and traveling with the team to no expense to them so they don't need any money from that. Plus if schools start paying athletes the schools with more money will be more dominate.

  6. I agree that college athletes put their heart and soul into the game, but they shouldn't get paid for playing. The players get lots of benefits such as scholarships, travel, dorms, etc. College players shouldn't get based upon the work they put in in college because high level players want to make it into the professional sport. I think students should be able to look into endorsements and get money for jersey sales.

  7. I believe that college athletes should not get paid because the reason they are playing sports in college is because they received a scholarship. A scholarship already grants them money that they don't have to pay towards their tuition. Also, if a college athlete is playing D1, they should be working hard enough to have the goal to make it to the pros in their sport. That is when they get paid and I feel like college athletes wouldn't try as hard if they knew they were getting paid.

  8. Going off of what Ian said, it has to be taken into account all of the support college athletes are already given. Technically, colleges don't have to give any money at all, but in addition to the scholarships and forms of financial aid offered, there are additional benefits like uniforms, warm up and relaxing gear, backpacks, and access to all the facilities the campus has to offer. Sports should always be about the passion, drive, and love for the activity, and should not be about the money offered. So, while I do respect your side, I would have to respectively disagree and say that college athletes should not be paid.

  9. I also agree that ncaa athletes should be paid because the university makes millions of dollars off their athletes through games and their likeness. But how would we choose who gets paid what? Like if it is a set salary for everyone wouldn't the best player and bench warmers make the same amount? Which isn't fair.

  10. I like this as you found more of a different approach than what most people take with this argument. I also do agree, as numerous organizations can profit off of the images of college players except the players themselves. I also believe that they put in numerous amounts of hours and time that they should be compensated at least minimally such as a minimum wage job.

  11. I understand your point about college athletes being paid, but I disagree. I agree that they should maybe receive profit from the merchandise that's sold of theirs, but they should not be receiving pay like athletes in the NBA or WNBA do. Most of them have scholarships to these colleges which in my opinion is like being paid. Yes, basketball is important, but they are going to college for an education which the team is paying for.

  12. This has always been such a huge question for so many people in college and out. As a high school athlete, I believe college athletes shouldn't get paid due to other circumstances. But my main point would be that those college athletes are playing for heart, not money. If they are good enough, they could make it the pros and get paid much more than thousands of other jobs. I respect your opinion on this topic because there are so many arguments that you could make.

  13. This topic is very interesting and there are many different ways you can argue it. My stance is that I do not believe college athletes should be payed. Most of the college athletes that I believe would be deserving of pay already received a scholarship to attend the university, which puts them a step above the average college student. Also, college sports are used as a step on the path to be a professional athlete for the elite competitors. So, they are already being given a platform to work on their image and attempt to make a professional league where they can make unimaginable amounts of money. Therefore, because of their scholarship opportunities and a shot at making millions, I believe college athletes should not be payed.

  14. I totally agree they play for the school and should get some type of reward for their troubles and injuries like brain damage and broken bones
