The Avengers: Infinity War’s Effect on Marvel’s Success

The Avengers: Infinity War’s Effect on Marvel’s Success
Lauren Wroblewski

Recently, Avengers: Infinity War has been spreading through theaters across the world. Fans have been waiting years for this movie to arrive and finally, the time has come. It was known that the theaters would be filled on opening night, and its budget recieved $106 million Friday, April 27. As people continue to visit the theaters to see the Avengers in action, Marvel’s budget continues to increase. As Marvel continues to grow, the demand for merchandise will increase and supply will decrease. Due to their high grossing films, merchandise has been a huge hit in every store. Children want toys of their favorite hero and fans would want apparel and collectibles. As the popularity of Infinity War increases, products will keep up their prices until it dies down, which causes elasticity. The Law of Demand states that consumers will buy more of a good when its price is lower and less when the price is higher, so when the popularity of the movie decreases in time, prices will decrease and consumers will buy more of that product. This will still benefit Marvel greatly since their franchise is so large and they’re still releasing movies.

Marvel started off in financial ruin, and as stated by Mark Savage, “The comic book market crashed in 1993, thanks to a glut of underwhelming titles, and a crisis of confidence amongst collectors. Sales dropped by 70 per cent and Marvel was left heavily in debt. Shares that had been worth $35.75 in 1993 dropped to $2.38 in just three years” (Savage). This caused cyclical unemployment due to the market crash and since sales dropped, supply dropped. The demand for comic books wasn’t as popular, so there wasn’t much income coming in to the Marvel industry. After a while of fighting through the financial ruin, Marvel required the funding they needed to start their franchise with a character that wasn’t licensed anywhere else -- Iron Man. Iron Man was their first movie as an independent company, and it was a huge hit. This started their rise for success as they continued to create more and more movies. Each movie built up on their company, which helped create the funding they needed to continue creating fantastic movies. They were able to use the technology they wanted and needed to gradually build up to Avengers: Infinity War.

As fans continue to support Marvel’s upcoming movies, the company’s income will keep increasing for more years to come. Since Deadpool 2 is soon to release in three weeks, the company is doing great on their continuation of the franchise. Their budget has been a huge help in creating popular, successful movies and it has created more jobs in the long run. This helps decrease the unemployment rates by creating opening positions for each film for actors, cameramen, makeup crews, tech crews, and more. Avengers: Infinity War is so far, one of the biggest Marvel hits yet due to the movie’s crossovers, but we will hope to see more from the Avengers.

  1. Although there was a huge drop in revenue by Marvel because of the demand for comic books going down, they have regained that revenue and sales are now very good for Marvel. Due to the latest Marvel movie people have become more and more interested in what Marvel has to offer which is boosting the sales making demand for product and merchandise larger.

  2. Once the new marvel movie came out I all ready knew that sales for them would be so big, but I really did not know it would raise that much money. Sense the movie came out, tickets in the movie theater have all been sold out (Except the first row) and in every time and theater people have been buying there tickets day, and days before hand just to get a set. Once the majority have seen the movie I'm hoping it dies down so others can go see it. But in reality they won't. I had no Idea that Marvel took a big financial hit like that back then. That could of then the end for them, but Marvel studios will always find a way to bring them to the top. Just like they did now with the movie. Most people that go see this movie don't know that this might be the last one due it being the last comic book in the series. But that may not stop them making a new one, but it won't be based of the comic books any more.

  3. I didn’t know that Marvel was in such a bad financial state in the 90’s. I thought that they had always been popular with their comics and such. It is interesting to see how much they have grown as a company with the amount of heros they now obtain in their arsenal. This weeked, I had driven past the movie theater and I have never seen the place so packed. It makes sense as to why Infinity War is so popular and it is because of the crossovers in the movie. With Civil War, it was all of the Avengers that we know and love which made it a popular film but this topped off everything in the franchise. It will only continue to grow as people start to buy and collect their merchandise and the demand for all of that will only grow in the amount of time it will be in theaters. I think it is safe to say that Infinity War is now one of their favorite Marvel movies.

  4. You make an interesting point that sales for Marvel items like merchandise, toys, clothes, etc. will increase due to the popularity of the movie. Also, since consumers had to wait so long for the movie, this might have made it even more popular than if it had come out sooner. I never knew that Marvel was in a financial slump during the 90's especially since that's when comic books seemed to be even more popular than they are today.

  5. It was great on Marvel to adapt their company when it seemed liked it was about done. Switching their main focus from comics to movies was a great shift for them. To switch from a whole new type of media and have large success is pretty difficult and you can tell they put in a lot of hard work and they are reaping the rewards of it. Their franchise success really has no great competitors and are children's first introduction to super heroes which we all know, children want to wear their apparel or merchandise and that drives ales even more. Big props to Marvel.

  6. It’s really interesting that Marvel has built itself up from literally the bottom in the 90’s; now Avengers: Infinity War is smashing records in the box office causing it to be one of the highest grossing movies of all time. One of the reasons Infinity War was so successful is that Marvel has been building up to this movie with each film, constantly adding new characters and stories that will contribute in some way to the fights against Thanos. This built up a lot of hype and caused the demand for tickets to be insanely high, especially demand for the first weekend as many fans wanted to avoid the potential spoilers.

  7. I didn't know how drastic Marvel's debt was when they were still only releasing comic books. Do you think that they started to come back out on top of things because of Iron Man in general or because of the new releasing of movies that seemed to intrigue more people and different types of people? I agree that Marvel's merchandise is going to be a huge source of their profit in addition to the millions of tickets sold to go see their most recent movie Avengers: Infinity War. If anyone hasn't seen the other Marvel movies then it's possible that with the newest movie release, people will go out of their way to watch the other Marvel movies if they haven't already which would bring in even more profit.

  8. It's interesting to hear that Marvel was doing so bad in the 90s then to later skyrocket as one as the top companies producing movies. It makes you wonder how Marvel went from where they were to where they are now while other movies are making nowhere near as much money on an opening night. It's amazing how the movie industry functions with some doing amazing and others doing so poorly

  9. It is crazy how Marvel lost so much revenue in 1993, where it seemed that they may need to shut down. The new Avengers movie has been such a success for the franchise. I feel if Infinity War generated so much revenue, the part 2 movie will be an insane success. In addition from the data of the money from each movie, it seems that almost every movie they releases makes more money than the one before. One factor that has been helping get more money is that there is more demand for their product. Marvel does such a good job of intertwining the movies, where one almost has to watch every movie in order to understand the next one that is produced. As long as Marvel is able to keep creating new amazing movies, I don’t see what could stop there successful business.

  10. It surprises me to find out that Marvel hit such a decline when comic books became less popular, but their recovery just goes to show how much demand there is for Marvel's content, and how the company did such an amazing job of transitioning mediums to provide what the consumers wanted. This is a prime example of how consumer preferences can vastly change the demand in certain markets, which, in the long run, greatly alters supply.

  11. It is crazy that 20 years ago that the company was ruined and then they fed into the demand for the movies. It is crazy Marvel is doing so well right now. Avengers: Infinity War was the fastest movie to hit 1 billion dollars. That is crazy because the revenue on the movie helps the movie theaters too. Most people get food when they watch the movie and that creates a lot of revenue too. The Marvel movies create a lot of revenue for everyone.

  12. Not only does the Marvel industry improve with the new crossover movie, the whole movie theater industry skyrockets as well. With such a popular and long-awaited movie, many theaters come out with special cups and popcorn buckets specific to the show. This helps increase revenue on the theater's side due to the influx of movie-goers excited about the movie. However, I wonder if the "sale days" such as $5 dollar Tuesday actually hurts the revenue. I know many of my friends opted to wait for the Tuesday low prices to see Infinity Wars. It certainly could decrease ticket revenue for theaters that offer it.

  13. Seeing Marvel’s success now, it’s hard to imagine a time when the company was doing poorly and in a large amount of debt. Switching their main focus to movies was a smart idea because the super heros have always been a hit with consumers. I believe part of the reason for their success is because the creators put in so much time and effort into each movie, making sure every minute is worth the money. Infinity Wars is a prime example of this because it contains all the heroes, making for an interesting plot because they all have different backstories.

  14. It surprised me to hear how bad Marvel was doing a couple decades ago. Marvel as I know them today is a huge industry producing highly praised movies. With the release of Infinity War just a few days ago I have heard its already setting record numbers for Marvel. I'm sure they are going to release a second part for Infinity War which will bring even more revenue in for the company and possibly break more records. And that's just the movies alone not including all the toys and merchandise. Marvel does a good job keeping the audience on their feet with good cliff hanging movies making you feel like you NEED to see the next one.

  15. Marvel’s pivot from comics to movies and TV has been phenomenal . Because by the 90’s and even early 2000’s Marvel was in debt which forced them to actually give the rights to some of their characters. To endure the set-backs marvel had and still be able to switch to a whole new type of media and have large success is pretty difficult, and you can tell that it took a lot for Marvel to get to where they are today. It’s interesting how much Marvel has reaped the rewards of its success. With their merchandise sales, TV viewers, and box office sales continuing to increase their is not place that Marvel can’t venture.

  16. I think super hero movies are super fun and interesting to watch so this was an interesting blog to read. I also love going to movies especially on $5 tuesdays and thursdays and so do a lot of my friends and I've noticed whenever it is a $5 movie day there are way more customers who want to go see movies so the theater probably makes way more money on those days than any other which is a smart marketing strategy because no one wants to pay $10 to see a movie anymore.

  17. 18. Marvel has done an amazing job with keeping its fictional heroes alive. There are so many series and sequels that Marvel has put out, and most people fall in love with each one. However, they just used their one last card. Bringing all of its heroes together into one universe was a major success for Marvel. It brought in elements from every single movie Marvel has ever produced. But what do they do now? They crushed the box office with this movie, and its hard to predict how they will continue to make movies and have fans still be excited about them when the biggest war of the universe took place in this movie.

  19. It's crazy to think how a company can lose almost everything and still end up becoming a huge success. Marvel managing to keep their demand for their products up is awesome, because it shows how quality the things that they provide are. managing to tie all the characters together was a great idea where you can be watching one movie and other characters can just show up out of nowhere its a great concept.

  20. Marvel had a great comeback from the 90's when they were in debt to to now, being one of the most popular franchises. Recently they have released many new movies that have been bringing in a lot of revenue, especially Infinity War, which is already doing amazing in theaters. If Marvel continues to release new movies with new ideas they can create even more profit.

  22. I saw the new movie last night and left me very excited for the next movie, which is of course one of the reason they get so many return customers to their movies on every release. They have done an incredible job of reviving the popular heroes over the years and now you can see even the obscure heroes from comics they are making into extremely successful motion pictures (i.e. Black Panther and Ant Man). They have an impressive hold on the hero movie market and it looks as though they will maintain that well into the future.

  23. Lauren- Avengers has become one of the most popular movies of the generation for a few reasons. One is I feel that because this movie was long waited to come out like a lot of things was very hyped up to begin with before the movie even came out. Being so hyped up to begin with caused them to bring in a revenu that has exceeded all other movies. Also from the Marvels series there are a lot of die hard people and being part of a series it is almost a must see movie for anyone that has been keeping up with them. Also there are many fans that like to see it more than once, this causes for an even bigger boost in sales and views for the movie with many people seeing it more than once. Not only are they bringing in a lot of money so are the movie theaters. From selling a ton of tickets to the over priced food they are bringing in a ton of money because of the demand for this movie.

  24. I have never thought of it this way. It is interesting that Marvel will make money not on the movies but also the apparel. It does make sense, as more and more movies come out and people start to like the movies even more they will want to get things like t-shirts or toys for their kids. There movies might have brought them up from bankruptcy but they will be making a profit on so many other times beside their movies in the future.

  25. It is incredible how much money movie franchises can rake in in kids toys and other products it would have been interesting to see if technologies increased or decreased movie related toys from sale. I also find it crazy how far movies have come in such a short period of time as the movies are parents saw were made on fractions of modern movie budgets with much less technologies available and now our movies cost millions of dollars and tons of hours to create our favorite cinematic masterpieces.

  26. I think movies like this show the amazing qualities of our economy, and this can be seen just by looking at the massive amounts of work it takes to produce a movie of this size. And not only does that budget employ people, but once it is released, that increases interest in movie theaters, marketing, land, and all the other assorted goods, but it makes me love the state of our economy.
