Apple’s iPhone 7 Explained

Apple’s iPhone 7 Explained
Written by - Ryan Wagner

On September 7th, at Apple’s launch event in San Francisco, the iPhone 7 was released, fully equipped with 256GB storage capacity, a water resistant body, extended battery life, and confirmed rumors about not including a headphone jack. Reviews released soon after and a vast majority of these reviews were negative. Consumers argued for the normative side of economics, that there should be a headphone jack. They disputed that Apple is manipulating their customers to invest in needless upgrades, knowing that Android’s Galaxy s7 is not a reliable alternative. Co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak, replied in regards to positive economics saying, "I think getting rid of the headphone jack now is more about pushing towards the inevitable future, which is what Apple has always been good at doing."
Along with the complaints about the lacking headphone jack, others began to bicker about the microeconomic effects it would soon have on the unemployment rate of the headphone industry. Millions of dedicated workers would lose their jobs and the unemployment rate would continue to decrease. Despite the worry, consumers fought the fear of unemployment and began pre ordering the new iPhones on September 9th, starting at 12 AM PST. We have yet to see if the opportunity cost of purchasing a new iPhone 7 outweighs the lost features.

  1. To be completely honest this article could have been more original. I think we all have heard quite a bit on this phone. The features as well such as water resistance, dual camera and Bluetooth pieces, no headphone jack. Along with the term "opportunity cost". I know this is a bit of a rant, but I will have to side with my last comment, if you have an iPhone 5 or higher don't bother getting this newest model. It is a waste of money unless you need what this phone has that the others don't.

  2. This topic is very hot right now; many people are interested in the cordless headphones, while many have worries about them. My biggest fear about this new Iphone 7 is the price of the headphones that are required for this phone. Do a pair of cordless headphones come with? What happens if you accidentally misplace your headphones... you're forced to purchase a new pair for $159? Personally I just feel like that price is way too expensive for something that is required for that phone. ALso, a question about your blog post, how would these new headphones affect the workers that make them? Although the headphones are changing, they will still be made by the same people and most likely the same amount of people. Overall I think this was a good topic to discuss right now and share people's opinions, I do think you could have expanded on the topic a bit more though and maybe have added a bit more information.

  3. The new owner of apple is clearly saying he wants to expand the future of technology by getting rid of the headphone jack. He also states that Apple has done this as a company before, but what I would really like to know is what have they done to expand technology before obviously they made a new phone and changed the name a couple of times but you could say the same thing about the other producers of smart phones. This excuse for having no headphone jack seems silly to me coming from the leader of apple and I think he should have to explain this lack of with more than a simple excuse.

  4. Despite all the controversy surrounding the missing headphone jack, you have to admit it is a brilliant idea on Apple's part. By making the iPhone and the separate headphone component complements in production, you are forcing the consumer to spend even more money. It was the same idea with Apple phone cases made for specific version of iPhones. You buy a new phone and you're forced to buy a new case as well. While consumers are conscious that they are being manipulated, Apple has such a high reputation in the technological world that they have room to be "unreasonable" and still maintain (and gain) loyal customers willing to upgrade with each new product that comes out.

  5. It's going to be interesting to see if the positive changes, more memory, more battery, and water resistance, outweigh not having a headphone jack. Being an Iphone owner I know I would definitely want more memory, because the normal 16 or 32 gigabyte storage capacity is simply not enough. My prediction is that people will see past the headphone jack, and other companies will also eventually abandon the headphone jack.

  6. All this is true, especially the microeconomics part. Yes, there will be lots of people losing their jobs over this headphone jack, but you have to look at the opposing side. There will also be a lot of jobs gained by the companies that already make wireless headphones, and the companies that will possibly be created to make these headphones. Also, if the big companies felt like they were taking a loss about the jack, then they'd also make wireless headphones instead of wired.

  7. I thought it was very interesting that in this article you talked about how the new Iphone 7 not having a headphone jack effects basically all headphone businesses. I didn't think about it that way myself but now that you mention it, I could see how the headphone companies would beginning to worry about their sales- given that apple is one of the most popular electronic producers. I feel like when Apple designed the Iphone 7 they also realized that the no-headphone-jack would have this effect n headphone businesses; forcing consumers to buy apples new top-dollar, wireless headphones. This was the whole purpose of not including the headphone jack in this new design.

  8. Obviously this topic has produced arguments on both sides. The new iPhone 7 provides a lot more space / storage than the other iPhones but, there is no headphone jack. Personally, I would like to hear something new about the new iPhone. I’ve watched the news and heard most of the information people are putting on their blogs. Besides more storage and no headphone jack, there is nothing spectacular about the new iPhone: I have all of the same features on my iPhone 6. Your post was good, but expand it more. Tell us something we haven’t heard yet because personally, I’ve read and heard the same information about the iPhone and it would be nice to hear something new.

  9. In terms of the microeconomics portion, I think the loss of jobs in the headphone industry is extremely unfortunate, because apple is cutting out such a common item for phone users, and now there needs to be a specialty product made. No one can really use a normal pair of headphones anymore as easily with their Iphone 7.

  10. I along with you and many others are baffled of Apple's decision to remove the headphone jack. In my opinion, the normative consensus is that the headphone jack shouldn't have been replaced by a speaker. However, Apple is thinking in terms of supply and demand and may have realized that a way to increase their profit, they have found "new technology" in a sense and due to this, their demand for their product will increase causing an increase in profit. Even though many may still want the headphone jack, but because there was "new technology" people are still attracted to the new trend and new iPhone 7.

  11. Although I am not in the market for a new phone right now, I still don’t think I would buy the new iPhone if I was. I agree with you when you say that Apple in manipulating its own consumers into buying products that wouldn’t be needed if they didn’t change the body/features of their phone. They did it with the iPhone 5 with the new lightning cable, forcing everyone to purchase new charging cables, and they are doing it again with requiring iPhone 7 customers to buy new wireless headphones. Even though they do it to generate more profit, it ticks a lot of people off.

  12. I agree that Apple should have held off on removing the headphone jack, but I don't think it will affect headphone companies. Although it might seem like the missing headphone jack is a negative economic aspect for headphone companies, I think it could actually be a positive. Rather than using majority of their time and resources making headphones that need to be attached through a wire and a jack, these companies will probably thrive by selling wireless headphones. The need for headphones hasn’t gone away, it has just changed from the generic headphone to the bluetooth one.

  13. Although Apple is a very influential company, their impact on the headphone industry is being overestimated. There are other very popular smartphones on the market that still offer a headphone jack, such as the Galaxy S7. Claiming the millions would lose their jobs is quite an exaggeration, when quite frankly, the headphone industry would only sell more wireless headphones than usual.

  14. I disagree with the furture unemployment rate for the people who are making the headphones, it would only be upgraded and the workers woud learn how to make the new earbuds, and maybe add more jobs at Apple for people. As well as the future look for Apple will be really expensive to upgrade which I agree on. The whole new upgrade means all new pieces and try and sell the old pieces will end up being just as hard as selling an IPhone 3.

  16. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 and I'm fine with it for a long time. I'm not very big on phone upgrades, especially if they're almost the same every time. Unless my phone is way out of date, then I'd consider getting a new one, but I'd want it to do what it's supposed to do. I don't think buying these new iPhones are any different than the previous, yet I can't really compare because I don't have one. Although, I find it interesting that there isn't a headphone jack,.. it's a bit off since people listen to music from the iPhones so often. And people are getting angry because of it. To me, most of these upgrades are kind of useless. I'm pretty sure they want to do better for the consumers, but they're mostly trying to get money.

  17. Although I do think Apple may impact the headphone industry, I do not think it will change the unemployment rate, on headphone workers. First off the demand of headphones will still be used for every other cell phone device and all computers. Also the headphone workers will learn how to make the new earbuds that don't plug into the headphone jack. If anything this could add more jobs for people that could make the Bluetooth earbuds.

  18. This new phone may have a significant impact on the market of headphone users or cause a great shift of the market to new or other brands. The lack of the jack can force devoted headphone users to move companies or use various cords to connect to the iPhone. This may again increase revenue for Apple as the sales of accessory wires could rise surprisingly. It is too early to tell.

  19. I do not think the new iPhone will significantly impact the headphone industry. While some people may use jobs, the demand for wireless/Bluetooth headphones will greatly increase. This will give the people who are out of jobs a job in an almost identical industry. I think the major outcome of the new iPhone will be an increase in supply of headphones that have cords because producers will anticipate more phones to go wireless so they will want to sell their inventory now.

  20. I do not believe that the new iphone will affect the headphone industry too much as there will still be a demand for them as not everyone will upgrade to the 7 anytime soon. There is still the competition with android which continues to have the headphone jack. Therefore jobs will not be lost because of this nor will there be a major affect to the industry.

  21. I think that the headphone industry of Apple is going to have a positive outcome. The new bluetooth headphones called 'Airpods' are going to have an increase in demand. These little headphones can easily be misplaced and Apple only provides you with one pair. Consumers are going to purchase the new Iphone and lose their headphones and will have replace them.

  22. I personally do not believe that the headphone jack loss will create a shortage of jobs. There are still the headphones that can be used with this phone. Beats has come out with wireless headphones, Bose, Apple, and many additional companies have accommodated this change. Just like the VP said, Apple has always been taking steps to move forward and create the most innovative technology to release. In the long run, the headphone jack should not outweigh the other advancements the company has made in furthering their production of a higher quality product.

  23. While I think it is true that it will have an impact on headphone industries, I do not think this will necessarily be a negative one. Apple phones now create more opportunities for headphone companies to be innovative and create new headphones, such as wireless ones. I believe this won't hurt the headphone industry but possibly even help it.

  24. Although it may seem like losing a headphone jack on the iPhone 7 will make it not worth our money but I feel like there are other capabilities that outweigh the idea of no headphone jack. 258gb storage capacity on the new iPhone is nearly a small computer. Therefore I believe having no headphone jack won't matter in the long run. The other cool features like storage capacity, and waterproof ability make up for it.

  25. As the iPhone 7 is said to be losing a headphone jack, I think it's weird how people are super excited about it. Personally, I like the headphone jack and I could care less about if there is one or not. While the iPhone continues to improve, I find the waterproof part to be more exciting and interesting, rather than the headphone jack. People now won't be able to wear normal headphones as much; which to me, is unfortunate because I enjoy earbuds and like plugging them in. I believe people should save their money, because always updating to a new phone every time it comes out, why not just wait? In a couple of years, a more improved model will be out and will have even better results/features.

  26. I sometimes think the new phones are over hyped. The 6 or 6s is probably just as capable. Unless you are going from a flip phone it is almost a waste of money to upgrade each year for the new Iphone. Now for the part about the headphone jack, Apple has been a leader in technology for the past decade if not longer. I think it is best to trust what they are trying to do. I have read things that show removing the headphone jack created a lot of space for things like storage and longer battery. Overall I think trusting Apple is a good idea.
