Lowering the Price of College
With many of us graduating high school, we take into consideration our post high school plans; many of those plans involve picking out and attending a college in the fall. Most of the time people don’t know how they will pay back or how long it will take to pay back the debt they owe. A lot of times students find themselves asking why isn’t college free, and the answer is the government can’t afford it, so that would leave the taxpayers.
The average student loans are around 33,000$, that is a ton of money, but paying 347.74$ a month with an interest rate of 6%, it can be payed off in 10 years and 9 months. That is a very long time, but the cost does vary depending on what the major is. If student textbooks weren’t so much money, we could all save a lot. Spending about 400-500 hundred dollars on a textbook many will only use once or twice is crazy. College is very important for many people, but the cost is just way too much money for some. College should not be free by any means, but it should be cheaper than what it is, the cure for cancer could be in the mind of someone who can’t afford the costs of college, that sounds dumb but sadly it is a very true fact.
Many schools spend too much money on administration and not enough on academics, the cost of college education generally always rises faster than inflation.
With the college rates going up more and more people won’t be able to afford to go to college. Yes scholarships are around, but they only go so far in one’s career. Let’s say you wanted to do something in the medical field, you’d be in school for 11 years; the debt from those 11 years would be about 166,750 dollars of debt, in the real world no one can afford that. No matter how hard anyone tries, no one can afford that much money. Med students start making money after their internship of 3 years. So many people have the knowledge of Becoming a doctor, but it is very expensive and not many have the money for it right away.

Many people who start college, pick the career they can afford. We need people for everything, but what’s the  Point of doing something you're not in love with because you simply can't afford it. This is why college prices need to be lowered, College should not be free by any means but it does need to be cheaper for those who can't afford it.

  1. You made some interesting points there. I knew college textbooks were expensive, but I hadn't expected them to be over $100. So yeah, I can see how such things are ridiculously priced and because of that makes it harder for students to afford college. That's probably why some (maybe many) colleges have recently begun lending textbooks out to students as they would with a library book. I don't recall if they charge anything, though... I'm pretty sure it's free. Anyway, by going about the college textbook crisis in this manner, especially if more colleges adapt this new strategy, it should help save students hundreds of dollars towards their tuition that they can spend on other pointless things or on paying off their college loan.

  2. While I do agree with your claim that college is very expensive, there are many ways for students to not leave college with so much debt. Many students try to get scholarships and even if those scholarships are $500 that small prize is like one payment for college done before you even start. Another way students can leave with less debt is if they work during college. Even if students only work once a week they will still be bringing in a paycheck every other week that they can use to pay off tuition. Finally, another way students can leave college with less debt is by conducting research in college and receive grants for their research. These grants can sometimes take up to a couple thousand dollars off of your tuition, which is a huge deal in both the short and long run. Also, many schools are willing to help out students who may not be able to afford college by giving them student loans that do not have interest on them until after they are done with their schooling, this way those genius students who can not afford college can still go to college and find the cure for cancer.

  3. I agree that college should be cheaper especially people who can't afford it, but I do disagree about how "Scholarships are around but only go so far for ones career", it doesn't matter what career you are going in because their are scholarships for just about anything that can help people get some money off of their tuition. But it would be nice if colleges were more affordable it might even help the economy grow with more people going to college and ending up getting jobs especially better paying jobs.

  4. Yes I agree that college costs are very expensive, but I do still see why college does cost a lot of money. Colleges are huge campus's with ton's of students. Things like Room and Board costs might seem expensive, but when you think about how much a regular apartment for the year would cost, along with being fed for the whole year, the numbers start to make more sense. The tuition is also so high, because the campus needs to pay for the professors to tech the class, and the janitorial staff to keep the grounds clean. The buildings need to be kept up and these things cost money. As for books, there are many programs and sites where you can find old textbooks for less money. So while I agree that college prices are very expensive, some of these costs are easily explainable due to the expenses the college needs to pay to maintain a nice environment.

  5. I definitely agree with you in that college is way too expensive. I understand that they have buildings to maintain, and professors to pay, however where does all that money go? I also agree with the fact that there are so many missed opportunities with people who can’t afford college. Although there has been some good circumstances with people paying, or helping out with college tuition, like Nicki Minaj did a few weeks ago, it just isn’t enough to help the hundreds of thousands of people that choose not to go to college simply because they can’t afford it.

  6. Yes, like you mentioned, college is very expensive: tuition, books, room & board, meal plans, the list goes on and on. And although the cost seems very unreasonable, the money goes to supporting large universities, paying qualified professors, and giving students the best resources available to them. I understand that some people have more advantages than others in terms of affording college, but scholarships, even for small amounts of money, can be critical in the long term. College costs will always be higher than people want, it is just the tradeoff of whether or not you think a post secondary education is worth the cost and possible debt or not.

  7. I agree with this on a personal level. College is much too expensive. I wanted to attend Julliard, but due to 75,000 a year WITH scholarships, it made it impossible to attend there. I had to settle for Cartage College. I am very happy with that choice now after visiting New York and realizing that it's not the best place to be. But, regardless, the expense of college is horrible. For Carthage College I received even more scholarships, especially so they could keep me due to Julliard's interest and I got tuition from 56,000 down to only 12,000. Without that, I might not have even gone to college at all. Due to this struggle, It's a must that college cost is lowered so that people can follow their dreams without limits.

  8. People shouldn't not be able to pursue what they want to do if they cannot afford it. Hopefully we can start implementing more programs to help the less fortunate go to college. Additionally, I think it is kind of unfair that someone who goes into a major like nursing or engineering will pay of their loans much more faster than a person who goes into history for example. I feel like people should not want to do what they love because that job they would get would not get them as much money as other majors would. The opportunity cost for a high paying job that you don't like is your happiness and that is not okay. Everyone should strive to be happy and not be in it just for the money.

  9. I agree that college is too expensive, and they should just take out tuition in all states for in-state students. They are doing the same in New York now, and so far nothing has been said about how bad it is. Colleges are making money hand over fist. They don't pay their professors a ton of money, so where does the rest of it go? I want to go into the medical field, and while I will be making a decent living after graduating, I fear for when it comes time to buy a house, a car, and still manage to pay my loans. The worst part about all this, is that my parents are not helping me pay for my student loans. My dad is still paying off his, so they can't afford mine. When I apply for financial aid, I will most likely get slim to none, because of his income. Students who are paying for their own college, and their parents make too much to get any money, should be able to receive financial aid, just like everyone else. Unfortunately, that's just not how the world works. Money is all that matters in their eyes.

  10. While I agree college costs are high, there are many ways for people to lessen the cost they're paying. Applying for scholarships is one of the main ways students lessen the cost of college, and while it is a tedious task, if college is too expensive for an individual, filling out the scholarship applications would be totally worth it. Additionally, students earn full rides for athletics and academics, and while that's not a possibility for everyone, many students earn this opportunity through hard work. Overall, I do agree with your argument, I feel as though it would be more persuasive had additional sources been included.

  11. I agree with your whole statement on how college is too expensive when all your trying to do is pursue a dream/job that you have been thinking maybe since you were so little. I do believe that they should lesser the price of college because as our generation leaves high school to go to college, they are going to be the ones that people want to hire when they get their degree and leave college. So by that, they should make college less money so that they will be able to hire people when they graduate that are willing to pay the price for college, other wise many people might not go to college and therefore wont have the degree so you can hire them

  12. I agree that college costs are high and that the price should be lowered to go to college by all means. Although, I do see the reasons why college costs so much money. Scholarships do help many students with the cost even if the scholarship isn't a lot of money, it's still helping. Students could also apply for grants.

  13. Yes college is extremely expensive to anyone that enters, and the books don't help bring down that cost, but there are people that can afford it and with scholarships it makes it easier on the dept. There are also people that have taken the class that are willing to sell the books at a cheaper price like a $500 book could be resold as low as $50. There are already ways around the prices of college it's just most don't take the chance to jump on those miracles of less debt.

  14. Although I agree that it's unfortunate-- the fact that college is simply unaffordable for some students and their families, there are ways to help yourself out with the price. Scholarships are almost always an option for students, and the money being spent on college is going towards supporting the university, giving attending students valuable resources, and paying professors. While it is hard to accept, simply asking colleges to lower their tuition prices just won't do anything. There's no point in arguing without a possible solution in mind.

  15. I agree with your argument that college is too expensive, but I also disagree with your statement that college graduates leave college with a lot of debt making it harder to start their life after. There are plenty of opportunities that many college students don't take advantage of like part-time jobs and internships that they could work to save money up while in college versus waiting till after college to start working and then realizing you are in debt. While someone who had a job during college would be able to pay off college loans. Overall, I believe it is a strong argument, but I think that although college is expensive, there are steps students could be taking to help with the cost.

  16. I agree that college is extremely expensive and should cost less. In today's society it's very difficult to get a job without a college degree, but when college costs so much, it's more difficult to obtain that degree. Although scholarships do exist in order to help minimize the cost, students are still in thousands of dollars of debt when they graduate college. Overall, I agree with your statement as someone might not be able to use their full potential in their desired career simply because they cannot afford the higher education.

  17. Where are YOUR solutions on how to lower the cost of college? I don’t feel like you explained what ways colleges could lower their prices by doing x or y. You are pointing out facts that things are overpriced, and due to that, people cannot pay to go to college. What are things both the students and the schools do to lower the prices of tuition, room, books, etc.? You say things like “college should not be free by any means but it does need to be cheaper for those who can't afford it” but then you don’t give anything else as to how! You need to answer the how part.
