The Economic Impacts of Zayn Leaving One Direction
What’s not to like about the hot Zayn from One Direction? Or should I say what's to like about him? Teenage girls all around the world are sad after finding out Zayn has left the popular boy band One Direction. On March 25, 2015 Zayn Malik states that he is leaving the popular band One Direction because he wanted to be a normal 22 year old boy. Who would’ve thought that fans would care so much that they would cry over one member of a band leaving? Some companies are losing employees because the workers need time to grieve. One Direction Tweeted: “After five incredible years Zayn Malik has decided to leave One Direction. Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis will continue as a four-piece and look forward to the forthcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, due to be released later this year (Burn-Callander).” Since the demand is so high to see One Direction in concert I think that the impact of Zayn leaving will greatly impact fans around the world. Now that the group lost one of their members they will have to continue without him which will lead to less fans buying tickets to go concerts because the group is not the same without Zayn. Many people around the world have taken vacation time off work to relieve themselves from this tragic event. I believe the reason he left was because of his fiancee Perrie Edwards, she was the negative externality in the relationship between the boys. If he would’ve just focused on being with the band and not worried about her none of this would’ve happened.

According to this picture I guess One Direction is not complete...Sorry females. Now that Zayn has quit One Direction the revenue that the band will make will go down because they aren’t the same anymore so they will potentially lose less fans. I believe that the band will eventually break up because of unhappy fans. Since there are less people that will go to concerts this means that they will have to lower the price of tickets because they are supplying less people. I think that there will not be a surplus of people that want to see One Direction because now that they are not the same without Zayn.
Supposedly a day after Zayn quit One Direction he was seen walking into a recording studio so maybe the main reason he quit was because he just didn’t want to be apart of One Direction. He said, "I feel like I’m doing what’s right, right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good ... My main message is I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while for the sake of, maybe, other people’s happiness, and that was mainly the fans, and, and I only ever tried to do it for the fans. And it was only ever for them, and basically I’m only upset because I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way and that’s the main thing that I don’t want to happen. It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I can’t do that anymore. It’s not real to me (Lockett)." He is trying to let everyone down easy by saying that he is quitting the band but as far as we know he could’ve just wanted to leave so he could go solo. Some trade-offs you could do instead of going to a One Direction concert are: Go to a cooler concert like Miley, or you could not go to the concert and invest your money for your future. There are many ways that one band member in a band can affect the economy.

  1. Nick, It was really hard to read this post without evoking some deep seeded emotions. Also I think you are a hater! Miley isn't even cool. JUST KIDDING! I think that it is really interesting how you can relate something that really isn't a topic that revolves around econ and apply the same principals. Good Job!

  2. Many of us were really upset that Zayn decided to leave. Although others of us weren't upset because to us Zayn wasn't one of the main singers. But I wonder as well if the prices of merchandise with the five of them will go up. Also a source reported Zayn going to a recording studio and recording a new single by himself. Hmmm next Beyonce in the making...Maybe he didn't just leave to be a normal 22 year old.

  3. I loved how comical your piece was yet how it pertained to economics. Great job incorporating vocabulary such as supply and surplus because it works so well with our discussion in class. Do you think there are any positive externalities with Zayn leaving One Direction? Also, I really enjoyed the pictures and video that you had to tie with your piece. They all worked well together. Great job making this funny yet informative and accurate!

  4. This was a really interesting way to apply economics to a current event. Everyone will be focusing on how sad it is that he left One Direction, and the emotional aspect of it all. They won't be thinking about the economic impact, but there will be, if there's a change in ticket sales for concerts and albums. This was a really well written article!

  5. This is very interesting to hear about all the potential economic effects of Zayn leaving One Direction. You mentioned that there will probably be less people that want to go to One Direction concerts, which may be true but will the band do anything for people that want a refund for their tickets for upcoming concerts? If so, that could really be a problem for them. I can for sure see a decrease in One Direction's revenue in the near future. Nice job, interesting topic!

  6. Simply put: oh my god. I can understand people being disappointed, but taking time off work because of it? Wow. Maybe if it was Zayn's hairdressers and such, that might be understandable, but other people unrelated to this event other than liking One Direction is unbelievable. I didn't think it was a big impact on the economy, with one person leaving one band, but it seems I am proven wrong. Either that or you've it up so much I can't tell. Either way, bravo.

  8. I don't know if I should take this article seriously or laugh at all the jokes insulting Zayn. "What’s not to like about the hot Zayn from One Direction? Or should I say what's to like about him?" with this comment right here you probably either one, gotten the attention of your reader, or two made your reader pretty mad depending on if the reader is a fan of Zayn or not. Thanks nick had a very good laugh at 8 in the morning.

  9. I think this was a great topic to write about. I am interested to see what will happen with concert sales and merchandise sales in the future. I agree with you in thinking that concert sales and revenue will go down. I wonder if merchandise with Zayn will increase in value because he is no longer in the band. This was well written Nick.

  10. I think that it is very interesting that people are taking off work and taking vacations to deal with such a great loss. It's not like he died, he is just starting a new different chapter in his life. There are many trade-off for concerts to watch however the supply of UK famous boy-bands is lower. It is very interesting how one member of a band leaving can cause so much distress, and cause economic change.

  11. Nick, I got a chuckle out of your blog comment. For those of us who like one or two one direction songs and thought that the "directioners" were annoying could see Zayn leaving as a positive externality. I do think you are correct in that demand is going to greatly drop. Zayn felt the marginal benefits of himself leaving the band was greater than the marginal cost of the fans and group as a whole.

  15. The impact of Zayn probably would effect the band's revenue, but I'm not convinced that the band will lose a lot of money. Yes the opportunity cost of Zayn leaving could be losing some fans, but their band has already made so much revenue off of their success that I don't see Zayn's dismissal a problem. Their fan base is so massive that their band would probably still make almost the same amount of money. The only tradeoff of Zayn's decision is the chance of losing fans.

  16. First off, it's crazy that people are taking time off work to recover from Zayn leaving One Direction. The whole world doesn't even seem this effected when bombings happen or Isis commits another terrible act. I never thought about the economic down fall that businesses will have. For one, One Direction could possibly lose money because the fans that loved Zayn will not go anymore. Although, I believe that in reality One Direction is still going to make their millions and prosper without him. Nevertheless they are still continuing their world tour and frequently do appearances, therefore these are signs of increased revue. It was great how you mentioned that his girl friend was a negative externality but do you believe that there are any positive ones? Overall nice job with relating a topic that has sparked much discussion around the world and connecting it to economics.

  17. It's unreal how much people can love someone they haven't even met. People like him for his image and don't even know him, if people really liked him they would support his decision. People taking off work and actually being emotionally sad is absurd! It's a group of guys that sing and one of them left. It's really not that big of a deal! One question that is interesting is Zayn leaving enough to decrease sales in concerts and merchandise.

  18. This could either be a really good thing for the band and its merchandise or a really bad thing. Either people are going to want remember the five man band driving prices up for those things because the supply is very low. Or consumers are not going to want any of that stuff and await the four man band merchandise. This could also go for ticket sales, many some fans think that the four man band will be different than the five. Driving the demand and price up for ticket sales.

  19. I actually saw some of the comments on Twitter in regards to “losing Zayn,” and with the way people were talking about him, it almost sounded like he had passed away. It is crazy to fathom how one person could be revered so much, and I think you may be right in saying that Zayn Malik’s departure could have a detrimental economic impact on the band as a whole. His leaving may have eliminated the consumers of tickets who went to concerts solely to see him, and although Zayn made his case for leaving in a coherent way, that will not be able to make up for the opportunity cost of losing income as a result. But who knows, maybe Zayn’s leaving could allow the other members to foster new business connections and make themselves more appealing to a different demographic because the DNA of the band has changed. However, until the benefits emerge, there are a surplus of available substitutes as you stated, like going to see other, cheaper concerts, or maybe taking up music yourself. Either way, there will definitely be an economic impact on the band following this event.

  20. I had heard that Zayn had left one direction a little while ago, and it seemed like the majority of the people at least that I knew simply didn’t care, so I was honestly shocked when you mentioned that people are actually taking off of work to mourn Zayn leaving the band. I feel like most people didn’t react this intensely to the numerous threats to our country like ISIS than they did to Zayn leaving. However I can only wonder what effects this will have on the merchandise. Will people go out and buy more of the old merchandise with all five members or will they wait to buy the new stuff with only four members? It’s hard to tell. You did bring up an interesting point about how maybe people won’t go to their concerts anymore because the band is not complete without Zayn, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this band.

  21. I feel like we’ve all been played. Zayn just used one direction to become rich and now that he has left one direction will never be the same. My heart goes out to the millions of 12 year girls that have invested in one direction. With all that being said I felt that your blog post was very entertaining to read as you expressed your opinions on the topic.
