Painful Truth of the Women’s World Cup
Every four years the world’s best women soccer players from from across the globe battle to earn their country the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The first Women’s World Cup was in 1991, and in 2015 Canada will host the seventh tournament. The upcoming tournament is far different than the past; the 2015 Women’s World Cup will be played on artificial turf. Athletes everywhere are furious about the Canadian Soccer Association's decision and FIFA’s approval. Playing on artificial turf is far different than playing on grass. A survey conducted by FIFA found that 77% of female players think all matches at a major tournament should be played on natural turf. The marginal cost of playing on artificial turf is far greater than the marginal benefit.
United States Women's National Team players claim the game is totally different on artificial turf, and leads to many negative externalities. Megan Rapinoe says, “It plays totally different,” and fellow midfielder Shannon Boxx says, “It’s not the same game.” Playing on artificial turf increases chance of injury. Star of the U.S. Women’s National team Sydney Leroux used twitter to express her anger about the CSA and FIFA’s decision. She tweeted a picture of her scraped, bloody, and turf-burned legs. Other athletes spread the picture in support. Kevin Durant tweeted to show his support, Colin Kaepernick spread it on instagram, and Tom Hanks tweeted his opinion.
Sure, artificial turf has its advantages; it requires no maintenance and upkeep. But the truth is that artificial turf causes more negative externalities than positive externalities. The Canadian Soccer Association released that hosting the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014 and the Women’s World Cup in 2015 will bring in $337 million. Creating natural turf fields would increase expenses, but it would end the conflict.
A FIFA world cup has never been played on artificial turf before. Men’s teams never have, and probably never will play a world cup match on artificial turf. Women’s teams are outraged at the inequality. Fifty of the world’s best womens soccer players from around the world have joined together and obtained legal counsel to fight the inequality. The women demand that natural grass be installed. Fixing this problem could be as simple as laying sod over the artificial turf, like it has been done in the past. Is $337 million dollars really worth injuring the best athletes in women’s soccer?
The Women’s World Cup should not be played on artificial turf because it increases the chance injury and changes the game. Artificial turf increases chance of concussion and ankle sprains, and causes turf burns and turf toe. It also reaches painfully hot temperatures. Female athletes deserve the same rights as men. The opportunity cost to achieve equal rights might require female soccer players suing FIFIA, and possibly a strike.
FIFA and the CSA should consider marginal benefit and marginal cost of playing on turf. Less maintenance is not worth increased injuries and angry athletes. They should also consider the marginal cost and marginal benefit of creating natural turf fields for the tournament. Placing sod over the artificial turf is worth the price considering it would reduce injuries and end this conflict between athletes and FIFA.

Wow! Being a non-soccer player, I never knew how big of a deal this matter was. If anything, I actually thought that athletes preferred to play on turf fields. It seems like I was very wrong, however. You pointed out that turf has low maintenance cost, but if that's really the only benefit to it, why try to fight for it? The women athletes obviously prefer sod, so why fight with them about it? All of this drama is bringing negative attention to FIFA. The negative attention could cause their reputation to have a downfall, therefore, decreasing the value of their business. They may want to install turf to save money, but in the end, if the players and audience are not happy, FIFA will be losing money because sales will decrease.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about how much the artificial turf impacted the athletes. I mean I have played football on turf but it isn't as bad as the picture that you showed. If the athletes are getting hurt this much it really isn’t worth the money that they are saving by not having to maintain it. When you think about it, if the result of giving the extra effort to slide tackle, or dive for the ball, athletes won’t take that risk as much because of the result of a nasty turf burn. That would then lead to the style of play being less intense, and not as fun to watch. FIFA isn't helping themselves out at all, it is bringing a lot of negative externalities to the game.
ReplyDeleteFor starters, I didn’t even know that FIFA has only played on normal fields. I always thought that all of the games were turf, due to the fact that high level soccer here is played on turf. I don’t think FIFA should discriminate between men and women when it comes to field conditions and surfaces. I also don’t think it was fair that all of a sudden the women are required to play on the turf fields in Canada because all of them have been preparing to play on normal fields, and the surface of the field definitely impacts how the game is played. Personally, I think that FIFA should just switch all fields to turf or keep all of them normal grass rather than discriminating.
ReplyDeleteI have never thought about the difference between turf and real grass and the impacts it has had considering I do not play soccer or football, but from the picture you have painted I do not see why FIFA wouldn't want to have their athletes safe and on real grass if it meant that the athletes would be less likely to be injured. As for the athletes who are outraged, they could easily band together and say they refuse to play. I guess that is easier said than done, but I doubt any of them want to risk their career via injury just because of some turf. I think it should be just that easy to put in the sod. I completely agree with the women soccer players, even if this was men. I do not think it is a inequality thing but I do agree that it is wrong that they do not get real grass.
ReplyDeleteJackie, I agree with you completely that it is not fair that girls can't play on the same fields that boys do -- we even had that issue here at PHS in the spring with our turf. I definitely don't think $337 million is worth causing many injuries, because everything in that situation is marginal cost with no marginal benefits whatsoever. Also, tradition will be broken and I don't think the idea of that was well thought out either. Great piece!
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, I think if the world cup has always been played on grass then the women's world cup shouldn't be any different. I play soccer and I've never played on turf but if I did I would prefer actual grass because I know that you can get injured by turf.
